Trouble for me is that my cars are all completely different in character.

The 212 is fairly sedate and a bit rattly as it's a 220CDi.

The 211 is sedate-ish until she's nudged, then can be quite savage. Throbby rather than rattly as a V6 diesel.

The 215 is near silent, but I've never driven her with any other tyres than these so can't compare.

I've always been a fan of Michelin since I found I could get about 30k mile out of a set but that was on regular profile the B Class is a sport and I've never had low profiles before.
I worked within the vehicle contract hire industry most of my working life. We at HMC always insisted that a vehicle supplier always supplied their new vehicles shod with Michelin for the very reason, they had a longer life than other manufacturers. There was a down side however, the wet grip was perhaps a bit inferior. But then you can't have it all ways, like everything else you have to arrive at a compromise. :)

P Zeros on my 212, bit noisy and hard but ok
Bridgestone potenza on the A6 horrible
Pirelli Scorpions on the XC90 too early to tell
Michelin Pilot sport 3s on the SL were superb

I very much doubt it. Even my Cortina MkIII had low profile tyres .... 65 profile?

Actually yes this is the first car I've had with tyres that have a sidewall less than 1-2" high the rest were a lot higher

A tyre is 'low profile' if the tyre wall is less than 80% of the width. The actuall height of the wall is immaterial.

I have had two winters now from a set of Michelin Cross Climates and have not had to change to my winter wheels and tyres.
Possibly a little pricey, but with plenty tread left (approx.5mm) after 24k I am quite happy with the all round performance, not being stuck in six inches of snow is also good.

I've been looking into some summer rears:

Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3
£158.80Fully fitted price265/35 R18 97Y

  • Extra load
Like the look of these plus A rated wet grip and 68-70db, so a little quieter than most...
The Uniroyals are next best so far...
Any thoughts or advice?

You can't go far wrong with the GY for sure, the if a little pricey
Lots of converts to the rainsports on here though, cheaper and excellent wet performance but less longevity than others I think summarises

I got 10k out of the RainSports on the rear, I think that is good considering how much torque they handle and I do drive it ;). Easy 15k out of the fronts.

Value wise they are excellent.

My father has GY assy 3 on his W204 and they are superb but pricey

I currently have Michelin PS4 on mine. They seem to be holding up well and are Uber quiet. I only went with them as at the time they were cheaper than the GYA3 by £20/tyre. I haven’t been disappointed.

Others that I have used and recommend are Dunlop Sport Maxx RT2. Again Uber quiet and grippy in all conditions.

I had a tuning box on my C350, not the same level as a GAD map but gave a noticeable kick. I never had any issues in the snow with the RTs and they had done 8k miles when I sold the car and the rears still had 4.5mm tread on them (new they had 7.2mm).

I’m not for one minute suggesting they’re as good as a proper winter tyre as they’re not. But as they are a fairly soft tyre (higher silica content I believe) they fair better than some other tyres I’ve used in winter.

Any of the following won’t see you wrong:

GY A3
Michelin PS4
Dunlop RT2
Rain Sport 3’s (no personal experience but from what I’ve read on here from the likes of Jon and Guy then I see no issue in using them)

Just done 2000 miles on new Uniroyal Rainsports , seem pretty good on the Clk , the only slight downside is that if you ever drive on gravel they are epic collectors of stones in the tread . A minor issue I know but at the price I paid I would still buy again the moment I need new tyres .

Seriously, you think 10k is good? I would hope to get double your mileage out of tyres. My ML350 had new tyres all round when i bought it and after 15k miles they are only about half worn. Tyres are Perelli PZero's.

Yup, RWD and 700 torques regularly going through them, 1/2 the price of GY Assy 3 so unless the GY does 20k+ the RS3 is good value.

The Pirelli P Zero rears on my (mapped) E350 look good, great rim protection but, loud!
Also I've seen the remaining 1/2 life off in about 6-7k!
My decision is biased towards:
  1. Performance
  2. Quiet
  3. Longevity
Thinking at the moment Uniroyal Rains on the front with GY's on the rear...

Pretty much how I base my tyre choice. I’m happy to sacrifice longevity for grip and low noise.

I'm a low mileage driver, so the 'quality' of grip vs noise is ahead of longevity.
I am also heavy footed - on occasion!;)

That's what I'm running on mine at the moment, and can't say it's a bad mix performance-wise. The Uniroyals are sure-footed in the wet, and their turn-in wet or dry seems good.

The GYs on the rear haven't lasted all that well though... :)
