I've been looking into some summer rears:

Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3
£158.80Fully fitted price265/35 R18 97Y

  • Extra load
Like the look of these plus A rated wet grip and 68-70db, so a little quieter than most...
The Uniroyals are next best so far...
Any thoughts or advice?

Try Tyreleader for the Goodyears , £120.79 each and get your local tyre fitter to put them on. Mine fits for £13 each inc new valve, balancing and old tyre disposal.
The only drawback I have found is Tyreleader take around 6 days to deliver. (They use DPD carriers and the parcel is trackable)

Camskills. I've used Tyreleader, Mytyres and Tyres on the Drive. Camskills the cheapest by £40 a corner!

If I'm honest I'm still torn between the GY's and the Uniroyals ... the longevity + the quiet running vs price!

If it helps, I noticed no increase in noise when the Uniroyals went on. They're a high silicon content, and found them very smooth running.

The GYs on the back of mine are due for replacement soon, and now the RS3 is available in that size, they are likely to go on.

Get an online price & show it to your local indie tyre place ...... I bet he'll match it. I know my local tyre place will. I always use him, puncture repairs or tyres.

We need to keep our local Indies going & not use online suppliers.

Camskills are £1 dearer than Tyreleader for Goodyear Ayssmetric3's in 265x35x18, but if they are UK based, I'd order from them for the difference it makes.

If they can match online pricing I agree. But when it boils down to it, we all want the tyres as cheap as possible.

I also agree your local fitters can often pricematch.

but if there was only a few quid in it, I'd still use the tyre indie ..... he's to make living too. And besides, there's been times when he's done stuff for me for free

It may be because they’re on the front. You may do if you put them on the rear as more noise comes from the rear due to the wider tyres.

I went from some Bridgestone RE050A on my C350 (same DB rating as the Uniroyal at 73db) to Dunlop RT’s and the difference was unbelievable.

Every 3db equates to a 50% difference in road noise (so they say). I can quite believe it after the change on mine.

Or it just could be in your advance years that your hearing is going. It could also be mine having been around explosives for a few years..... :p

Bridgestones are notoriously hard though. Had them on my 350Z and 123d... Rougher than a badger's rough bits!

A plus 3dB increase is a doubling of sound intensity (which is not perceived loudness).
The human ear has a remarkable ability to hear a wide range of sound intensities and it typically takes a 10dB increase for the ear to perceive it a twice as loud (but this is dependent on the individual).

Since my post of May 30th I had a response re: the Goodyear Eagle F1 that I had sent off, apparently it's unsafe to use so they won't return it, however will give a 55% discount of the cost towards a replacement. The other 3 have been sent off and awaiting a similar response on them.

Not that impressed to be honest.

Having read this thread I bought a pair of Rainsports for the front of my E350 £105 a tyre fitted at the local garage. Been to Slovenia & back on them, no problems. Got 30K miles from the P Zeros they replaced.
