Just thought I’d ask this question before ordering.. I’m slowly going through my new toy (2002 S203 C270), & it’s service time. I don’t know whether to go for shell Helix 10w 40, or Castrol Magnatec 10w 40? Cars done 150,000 miles, & don’t know what’s in it at the moment (crisp & dry knowing my luck)

Any advice?

I think I went for the 5W 40 Castrol Magnatec in October/Nov. I will pop out to the car and check when I get back. On one site the oil manufacturer was recommending 0W 30 fully synthetic, I was sceptical and chose the 5w 40 for the obvious reasons.

I have heard (mostly people’s opinions, I would like to see empirical evidence) that the Castrol Magnatec protects better than the Helix from cold starts meaning (if true) it should be better for the longevity of components.

(Edited due to the fact I have a bad memory and have now added the right oil above!)

Thanks for the reply, I’m not sure which to go for, I had a look on eurocarparts site, & they’ve got a sale on (there like the DFS of auto factors) This is the first diesel I’ve owned, so it’s a whole new world to me!!

I am sure either will be fine, is it 229.51?
Mobil 1 5W-40 is a favourite but its expensive.

My bad, I just checked, I got 5W40 Castrol Magnetec which I believe is the recommended grade.

Forgive my ignorance, what is a 229.51? The 2002 w203 C270cdi is an OM612 engine from memory.

229.51 is the MB specification that defines the oil your car requires.
There are (in general) 2 common specs for engine oil:
MB229.5 and MB229.51.

You can use either in a petrol engine but you MUST use MB229.51 in a diesel if you have a DPF.
The spec doesn't define the viscosity and you can get various viscosities that conform to either standard.

229.51 is MB spec for diesel oil, it should be on the back of the container.

Cheers for the explanation on that. 2002 w203 diesels didn’t come with DPF and I believe MB229.5 oil is the spec required, Mobil 1 0w40 is the Mercedes approved for the OM612 turbo Diesel engine.

With respect to ECP, if you miss their sale prices, don’t forget to check their sister site carparts4less.co.uk which normally comes close to ECP sale prices and normally also has sale codes on which normally bring prices to almost exactly the same as ECP with sale code

In general 229.51 is the correct oil for diesels. Compared to 229.5 it has a different additive package with lower ash and different detergent and friction modifiers specifically for diesels. Petrol engines can also benefit from the improved detergent additives.

Again, more good information.

https://bevo.mercedes-benz.com/bevolisten/229.51_en.html

It is quite a good long list to pick from.

The oil I ended up servicing with is on this list as a 229.51 and was the following:

Castrol Magnatec Professional C3 5W-40

By now it is most likely treacle >_< as it is probably doing a good job cleaning out the crap the previous owner put in.
