Yep 229.51.
The viscosity is personal choice and to a certain extent dependent on the ambient temperatures you normally operate the vehicle in.
Its possible to get MB229.51 spec oil in grades from 0W30, 0W40, 5W30 and 5w40.

In general I personally prefer a wide viscosity range so would go for 0W40 or 5w40.

Thanks for all the info, the 20 litre option looks best value for money wise. Do we think that’s a good option for my 150,000 miler c class then?

I am sure either will be fine, is it 229.51?

the spec at that age will be 229.1. my C220CDi was the same oil spec. either of those oils will suffice. brands don't matter too much. just ensure it is 'approved to the specification' and doesn't just 'meet the specification' as I believe its worded. although to be honest, as long as the oil is changed regularly enough (as in at service interval or before) and its low ash oil on engines equipped with a DPF, I know of NOBODY that's ever actually had any issues. there was someone on here a while back I seem to recall used whatever oil they could get at the best price, but changed it every 5k miles or so and I don't recall them having issues.

it should be ok. it is 3 specs later than what was around for your car when new so should be fine. from memory only semi synthetic was required in the handbook but fully synthetic is better. do keep a close eye on oil levels at first after changing. 5w30 is very thin oil (I know, Fords use it) so if the engine has had thicker oil in prior to your ownership, you might find oil consumption changes (thicker oil is often used to mask oil consumption issues)

Yeah, I was thinking along the same lines when I come to change it. Goodness knows what’s in it at the moment, & how long it’s been in there for!! That’s why I thought may as well change it, then at least I know what’s in it.

If you buy the 20L jobby you could use it as a flush for 500 miles and then change it again it's so cheap .

I am tempted lol MOT is in Jan would be a good time to tell the garage to change the oil again, although all £65 of my current oil would be a flush :/ and with a new oil filter too.

Alexsdad: I have been advised in the past to use only genuine Mercedes oil filter and not a generic re-manufactured one, due to a vastly different composition. I don’t know if this is “blowing smoke” however perhaps someone else here can chime in with advice on that since you pretty much have the oil situation sorted?

I was looking at getting a Bosch filter from ECP, think I’ll swing by my local dealer & see what the price difference is. The car doesn’t smoke at the moment, although I do tend to service my cars every 6000 miles due to the little use they get (my last C180 only covered 3000 miles in 2 years) and I serviced that twice!!

for filters id always opt for genuine or OEM manufacturer (which I believe is Mann, but could be wrong) as from memory a genuine filter is about £1.50 more (when I had my C220CDi which I believe is a similar, if not identical filter) than a generic one from a parts factor which may or may not be of similar quality and will save you a world of potential headaches down the line. you just don't want to know how I found that out!

My local Indy uses Petronas Syntium 5000XS on my E350. Think it was less than £50 for 8 litres.

Did the 1st oil change on my W212 about 8 or 10 days ago. Used Total Quartz INEO MC3 5W30, fully synthetic. Its MB spec 229.52 ( Backwards compatible ) and I used a Mahle filter. 2 x 5 Ltr containers delivered, €70. Used a pump to drain it, and including Filter, used 6.5 ltrs in total. It was supplied by www.MicksGarage.ie
Will "Rinse and repeat" at 5'000 Miles.
Best Regards, Jim2
