Hi guys,

My 95' W124 E220 Coupe has developed an alarming fault. The rear end (suspect diff) has started whining and knocking loudly all of a sudden. The knocking is intermittent and happens at any speed, throttle or non, for a few seconds and sounds like s heat shield vibrating in the wind. Its not though I've checked. The whining is the worst, and it only whines when I lift off the throttle (whilst in motion). It doesn't whine under acceleration but the whine correlates with speed and is a little vibratey. Should I be looking for a new axel on ebay?

I think that you do need to be looking for a diff.

Check for play first, also look at when the last oil change was performed.

Diff's tend to get overlooked at oil changes [not sure why]

Thanks lads, she is going to get looked at in the morning so I'll let you know what we are looking at. It really doesn't sound good though. Whines, clunks and grinds. Came on all of a sudden too.

Just one broken ball bearing can smash it all up in a very short distance.
