I took my MIL home today, again (300 miles).
Talk had to be involved.
Apparently, my wife phoned 'Child-line' in the early 80s, when her mum bought a new Skoda Estelle.

I bet they're retro 911 status tail happy classics now?

Tell us about any of your cars that may have a character, it's name and why?
Hi, I think I have one of the earliest 220 CDI's in the UK - I hope. It is a T(98-99) registered C class 220 CDI purchased in the UK. How best can I get this clarified. Any help will be appreciated. I ask this as over the year 2 drivers have stopped me and told me so. Hence the curiosity. The car is as original as can be expected.
Any advise will be appreciated

My SL is called Margo, because she looks a little snobby, but underneath she has a wild side...
My 508D is called Fiona as she is big and bold and curiously sexy looking
And my Dihatsu Sidon is called Rodney because he is like a little dog that is always wagging it’s tail and is ready to go for a run..

I’m beginning to think I’m a little strange. o_O

My S203 number plate starts with BJ that prompts people to mention certain private activity... on my part I call her Barbara Jane just because it matches the letters. SWMBO is more aloof and simply refers to "The Car" :)

Not the car but on ships we tended to call the main engine Doris ( Doris the Diesel )
If I had to run down the engine room in the night when I returned to the cabin my wife would ask is Doris acting up again.

As far as I can remember I only had one car that had a "name" as such. It wasn't actually christened by myself but by my wife's brother, Tony.
We had this old green BMW "Neue Klasse" 2000 Saloon, (see Photo) that was a bit of a wreck and when we moved to Ruwa, (see Map) it got called the "Ruwa Rocket"......???
But I have to say it never let me down and before I had the Merc I was a Mobile DJ and it took me, the wife and all the Gear all over Zimbabwe doing "Gigs".

Ruwa. (We lived about 5k's SE from Ruwa proper).

That lovely Merc epitomises what many of us still talk about i.e.: "street presence". It just somehow lets other drivers know that it's special!

I paid, well actually the company that I had just started working for at the time, (in 1995) gave me a blank signed cheque and told me "go get yourself a car" with a limit of ZW$70,000.00 I paid 60,000.00 for it off a client of mine - it was like new even though it was about 10 years old.
ZW$60,000.00 was worth about £12,000.00 back then! It was a "Starting Gift" although it only amounted to about 3 and a half months net salary at the time.
I sold it 2 years later for ZW$70,000.00

It was a 200 Manual - wish I had it now in the condition it was then! Zimbabwe = no rust!

I couldn't say the same for the BMW, it lived on the coast in SA for quite a few years before I bought it so it had a bit...

You kept a car for two years !!!!!

Didn't have much choice in Zim considering the waiting list for a new car was 4 years!!! That's ANY car! (Not that there was much choice).
What was imported was a lot of cars from Japan because as you know after I think 2 years if you kept a car the tax on it skyrocketed! So we used to get a lot of Jap Models with only about 20-30 thousand k's.
Generally cars changed hands through word of mouth. Decent ones at least.

But hey, I did keep my Avensis here for 14 years! All I ever had to do, other than serving of course was change the Indicator Stalk.
Oh, and my Rover 75 for 6 years..

My BIL lived in Zimbabwe and when he found a car at a dealership he always asked for finance. He didn’t need or want it but during the UDI times, letting the salesman earn a commission was the only way he could get to bust the ‘cartel’ and actually buy it!

VW Scirocco. The Quattro, E350 CDi Blue Efficiency Sport Coupe, now both gone
My TT will become the "Quattro" as it's the awd. Ok, it's not permanent, just the haldex system, but, it's the only chance I'll ever have to utter those immortal words and get away with it. :D :D
