I thought you going to say £1000, with reference to the LED headlamp

LED headlamps are just coming to the new models, a normal complete headlamp can cost £1k, the complete LED rear lamps on my SL are about £185 each

How do you know the messaging system isn't at fault?
In your position I'd buy a new instrument cluster, just in case.

I think Jaysonyw has a hobby called fishing, he is obviously very experience by visiting his chosen river to selecting a good swim and pre bait the said swim in order to get as many fish as possible interested.
He then returns to cast his hook in to the swim and waits patiently for bites if none are forthcoming he then throws more bait in to generate additional interest from the fish.
A truly expert fisherman, he may have even learnt his craft from another forum member called Calumcco;)

I think these units have redundant pairs of filaments - it so the primary has failed and its on the second one.
I could be wrong but I seem to recall seeing something about it somewhere

Might have been me posting about my bulb replacement. Basically didn't realise there is only 1 rear fog lamp as both sides had double filament bulbs. On my S class they have 'standby lamps' which are basically the fog lights on reduced power if a real tail bulb fails. (page 370 of the manual i think). I spent 90 minutes trying to get all the lights working before rtfm and finding out they shouldn'l work all of the time.

Sorry to keep a dreadful thread going for any longer.

why stop there, why not get a whole other car "just in case"
Don't forget to also get another garage to keep it in, just in case it is to do with the surroundings.

Similarly, please make sure you only use the premium fuels in it as this may help ensure that the bulbs last longer.

A spare is a much better word to use on here rather than back up. ;)

Is backup an American word?

It means the same thing to me

What were you thinking of when I refer to backup? Stick the bulb behind the light cluster?use your common sense! Lol

Back up / reverse lamps are the same thing, spare / reserve is better. No idea if Back up is more USA talk the English, but it could be.

There is the third situation re Back up lamps, modern cars can use another lamp if an important one fails, and this is called "back up" as well. I hope this does not get members backs up. ;)

When you backup anything, you get a spare!

I am aware other bulbs can be a backup, but in my context it means a spare not create another backup, which is impossible to do in a bulb cluster

but thats the point Malcolm was making. theres ALREADY a backup there. you merely want a spare bulb in case the replacement fails.
