Hi all, went out to my car this morning and it would not start. Key turns in ignition and lights on dashboard come on but not starting. If I cross the solenoid the engine starts fine but not with the key. I have looked in the engine bay fuses and non are blown. I believe the "I" relay works and there is 12 volts going to the relay. Worst still gear box will only select reverse gear but the leaver moves through all gears. Does any one know what is going on here please.

Is the steering lock motor unlocking the steering?
If not it could be an EIS problem.

Hi Oldspanners, yes the steering lock is fine I can actual drive the car but only in reverse. Bought a new icarsoft today and have just cleared a million faults but when I start it up again the abs light comes up on the dash

Do you have any fault codes relating to transmission or EIS?

Break defective stop vehicle came up when I was clearing faults. The car started beeping and the carisoft was saying in could not connect. After trying to clear the fault for the second time it stopped beeping and cleared.

With so many faults I would check connectors to the ECU and transmission for corrosion or contamination and any engine earths after that you would need to go deeper into investigation of codes and perhaps a visit to a STAR.
LostKiwi is very much more knowledgeable on this.

Brake defective stops normal when accessing the braking system.
I'm surprised there are no gearbox codes.
The gearbox you have is a 722.6 which are quite robust. A common issue is the entry point for the loom where it goes in the gearbox. Remove the cable and check the plug and cable for oil.

I was hoping someone would bring up connecters as I did not want to mention that the engine slipped timing and it was just replaced 3 days before this happened. Better get people thinking rather than jumping to conclusions.

The conector to the gearbox was also replaced with oil and filter when the engine was changed a week ago...

Ah......
Do you know if they fitted the torque converter to the gearbox before fitting the engine or did they fit it to the engine and put it in?
It's very easy to damage the oil pump if not fitted correctly.
The correct way is to fit the torque converter into the gearbox and measure the height difference from the bell housing face to the three TC mounts. If this is not done or not correct it's very easy to damage the gearbox oil pump.

Who did the work?
Was it an MB specialist?

A company I would have believed were well capable as they work on Mercedes at lot. This car was driving perfect not a sign of any fault, it was parked up over night and turn the key in the morning and just would not start. If it was the pump how could I work this out and would there be any warning signs?

The only way is to measure pump pressure or pull the box out.
Given you've had a stack of work done I'd be speaking to them to get them to sort it.

Only problem is there over a 100 miles away which I would have to pay transport for. Would be had to convince them its there problem.

Is there enough oil in the box?

You'll need a transmission dipstick to check.
How long have you had the car?

I have had the car about 3 months and 2 weeks ago the engine slip timing. Got an engine with 60k on it and a new chain kit. They noticed the oil was leaking from the gear box so they changed the connector, oil and filter. I will have to find a dip stick to check the level then first. I will also ring the garage tomorrow to see what they say.

Just also to mention, when the engine seized I also got the error message reduced braking effort. Is this a coincidence that I had brake error messages then and now?
