Hi,

Can anyone give me some advice regarding windscreeen replacements?

Travelling down the motorway today and a stone has caused a large crack on the bottom of the windscreen.

The car is still under warranty (just over 2 years old) if that makes any difference and I want a genuine MB OEM replacement for it.

Whats the best way of getting an MB OEM screen fitted?

I live in Nottingham.

Not spoken to my insurance company or MB Nottingham yet.

I dont want an inferior screen fitted.

Any advice would be appreciated.

The car is a W205 C220 BlueTEC Sport

Thanks

Jono

Mercedes don't make windscreens. Have a look on your screen and it will give the manufacturer. As long as it's from same manufacturer I would be happy. When I had the screen replaced on my SL it was done by autowindscreens with a Saint Gobain one who made the original one. The only difference was the lack of the star symbol.

If you want one with MB mark I guess you would need to speak to your insurer to see if they will pay for one.

Look at your insurance policy, chances are there is a dedicated number to call for glass replacement and the cost to you will be the glass excess, possibly £75 these days. Your insurer will use someone like Autoglass or AA Windscreens - mine uses AA windscreens who were excellent, very careful taking details of the car to make sure they got the correct screen. Also their fitter for this area was superb.

You dont need to accept Autoglass.
Just go to your Main dealer, ask them to do it and deal with your insurance company.

Most insurance companies try to push you into Using Autoglass ( and no they are not the same quality glass) , neither do they know how to bond them properly or wait the right amount of setting time, or even put the car level. Do you have rain sensors or up front display etc. Huh do they actually know how to connect them.

All you have to say is **** off, I paid an insirance premuim for Mercedes and I want them to fix it! and you can have it done at a Mercedes dealer.

Sure a load of people will tell you Mercedes dont make glass etc. But sure as hell they make the OEMs deliver to their standards.

But did they know how to bond it properly, on an SL its a major part of your safety.
Been through that nonsense, they tried to get me to have Autoglass fit it, and I made them ask Autoglass how they would fit it.
Basically they didnt comply with TUV standards and the main dealer proved the i tegrity of the car would be compromised. I surance company backed down ****** quickly.
Well its your life .... so do what you want to do.

That's funny - it's probably luck of the draw but I've used Autoglass locally twice over the last few years and each time they insisted that I got the car in to them at 08:00 where they put it inside and having fitted the screen it was left inside all day or overnight to bond. They also re-fitted a screen on a Daewoo (Ssangyong) Musso 4WD I had that had been badly fitted before. Same process except they spent an hour or so scraping the old bond off etc. That one I paid for (it was like it when I bought it) but the others were insurance and they didn't seem to cut any corners at all. Helpful people as well.

Your insurance company will then probably point to a clause in their windscreen cover that states if you take your car to a fitter outside of their network, the most they will contribute will be £xxx. In other words, you insist on MB fitting the screen, then you will have to pay extra for the privilege.
If you don't believe me, I'll scan and post the appropriate clause in my insurance to prove it.

And that will make them sit up and take notice?
Using those words, highly unlikely:p

Well I did ask awfully sweetly a few times and then got fed up. Under insurance law they cant really refuse to repair it properly.

And yes I got what I wanted.

If you have auto rain / light sensors, you need the genuine unit or else you cannot calibrate the auto sensors as there is a code on the windscreen that needs to be entered in to the STAR system to calibrate the sensors.

I agree with the installation aspect you raise, but I do have to disagree with the OEM issue you raise from my personal experience of having my car broken into a few months ago.

I do think the service you get from the dealership would be far superior as the quickfit style mobile glass installer left broken glass at the bottom of the door sill, so now when i close the drivers door I can hear some broken glass shake around in the door. He claimed he couldn't get the glass out because of the side intrusion bar, but if I had done it through the dealership, I would be jumping up and down to have it done perfectly.

The other issue is the next day I was going to leave my car for a week at Gatwick airport long term carpark, If I went to the dealer I would have to book the car in, wait for the dealer to have an opening, in the mean time pay £100 each way for a cab from my place to Gatwick airport for a 6am flight.

The mobile glass fitters are definitely more convenient in certain situations.

For a front windshiled i'd personally be taking it to a dealership though, a friend of mine had a mobile guy do his windscreen, he bonded the glass and all, but didn't refit the side surrounds properly, the surround (metal sheet) on the motorway lifted and cracked is windshield within 5 minutes.... lol

Ok here are my thoughts, I had a screen replaced in my car by autoglass, everything worked, light, rain, nav etc without coding.

However, the rain sensor did not appear to be as sensitive as it was prior to the screen fit. It still worked acceptable, but I noticed a slight delay in it's activation.

Mercedes told me they have to 'code' the windscreen to the car, not calibrate the sensor, and it has to be a genuine 'Mercedes' windscreen, I hear people say that Mercedes don't make windscreens, to be honest I have little faith in my dealer as they have messed a few things up for me. But from other posts I have seen with people retrofitting auto wipe functions, it simply needs disable / enable and calibrate which takes a few mins.

The insurance company should replace like for like, if they don't then they haven't done the correct job.

I have had no issues with Autoglass replacing my windscreens, they have done a great job and everything works afterwards.

I would have thought you would be wary of recommending Mercedes dealers do the windscreen replacement given the issue you have with them replacing your door window glass.

I have had 3 windscreens replaced on a Mercedes cars and never had to calibrate any sensors.

Windscreen

Hi,

I would like to thank all members for there input it has been really useful.

Having spoken to my insurance company they have agreed without hesitation to have the screen replaced by the Mercedes dealership in Nottingham.

I spoke to Mercedes prior and they gave me a fully fitted price of £423.00

So it's now booked in and all I pay is my £40.00 excess.

It appears I have a good insurance company with no quibble.

Thanks :)
