Wrong Exhaust?

Hi all, I have a '95 E220 CE. When I recently had it serviced the mechanic recommended a new exhaust as the baffle(?) was gone. So yesterday I popped down to my local fastfit. Guy said no problem, it'll only take 20 minutes, took out a catalogue, got new box and removed old one. A few minutes later I could tell there wasa problem. He had presumed that the box for a saloon would fit the coupe too. He said they hadn't a specific box for the coupe. An hour and a half later after much heating, bending, pushing, clamping and finally welding he said it was done.

Seemed fine but today when driving slowly or reversing I can hear a loud growl that wasn't there previously. Before I go back with it to fastfit can you guys recommend what action I should take/ insist on being done? Can this box (for saloon) be sucessfully installed on a coupe?

Thanks in advance,

Les

Blimey,

Sounds like they have well botched the job. Did they discuss what they intended to do and did you agree with it?

In my opinion they should get the right parts and reinstate the exhaust to its standard form. If this means they have to replace the whole exhaust as they have butchered other sections to make the wrong part fit then that is their problem.

On the other hand, if you agreed to them doing what they did after they had fully explained the work to be done then I suppose you have accepted the outcome and its down to you to live with the consequences. What happens when the next bit needs replacing and the standard part now wont fit?

The Growling noise you are getting will probably be the misaligned exhaust touching the underside of the car at some point. there is not usually a lot of room to allow for non standard parts.

Hi Les,

I reckon they have damaged the original part of the system with all that massaging. You deserve replacement of ALL the damaged sections with the proper ones.

IMO MB exhausts are of exceptionally good original quality and its a shame that you've replaced it with such an inferior part. Best of luck with in though.

I agree with Clive that it is a shame that you have not used an MB box, most of the fast fit ones fail 1 day outside the 12 month or 10k miles.
