Having serviced it, changed the stat, the ATF, and fitted a new temp sensor today all ready for a trip to the S of France....

....the @%^*$ing back box falls off.

On inspection, the bracket at the OS end has just torn, being made, as the body is, of special ****-poor quality quick-rusting soft cheese metal.

If yours hasn't fallen off, best check - it's probably going to....

Many cars get this fault, just have a new piece welded on or use a modified clamp

Yes, this morning's project is not earning, but rigging some kind of sling so I can drive it to get it welded.

You can't really just use a different clamp - it's the whole bracket that's ripped off. And there's nowhere to attach anything under there without a lot of phaffing around with the heat shield and making new attachments etc.

My original exhaust broke a bracket too. I was in Spain at the time so I took it to a local garage which welded it as ,Malcolm has suggested, for the huge sum of 10 euros. It was 8 years old and had lasted 150,000 miles.

It is now 10 years old and has covered 180,000 miles.
Do not think that your predicament is the end of the world !

I don't but it's just frikken annoying that, having spend another small fortune on it in prep for a trouble-free family jaunt to the S of France, the very next day the ****** exhaust falls off. Having to find a welder abroad with a car full of kit and two small kids and hotels booked in advance, is what exactly what I'm trying to avoid!

Should have got a Skoda I guess...

Surely the rusty bracket would have been visible when you serviced it?

I didn't. And it's just snapped, so it probably looked like it had for years till it went over one huge pothole too many.

It's a W210. If you suspected everything that's rusty on it, you'd never have it off the ramps...

Yup. Took it to a welder today, as arranged. Then his mother got taken into hospital, so I picked it up 5 hours later in the same state as I left it.

Try again tomorrow.
