i checked the operation of the w/s switch and it appears not to be working however the gearbox is very responsive and it seems to change through all gears so that leads me to believe its not stuck in w so what other causes are there for the switch not to be working
many thanks in advance for any help

Have you tried holding a certain revs, say 2000rpm and pressing the switch.

If I do this with mine (using C and S) the revs rise, indicating it's doing something.

Go to a hill, stop. Now take your foot off the brake...in W the car will hold still, in S it will either go forwards (as mine does) or slip backwards.

I think the 1997 C200 did have it Malc.

I was just thinking if built before 06-96 and this is possible it would be the older box

Not sure ( but probably wrong) that the older box had W/SW switch.

Thanks,,it could be the switch as on the 210 that is not throwing the dolly and the button doing nothing.

Another way to test other than the first gear start in S is the 2 different speeds in R

Or my hill start trick...I use it at a particular hill with traffic lights to move forward, stop, move forward, stop...in a queue.

It's the sprag clutch which prevents it rolling back when in W...
