I put a mercury thermometer on a vauxhall viva dash back in the early 80,s one summer and when i looked it had reached nearly 90c !!!
I drove through death valley at 50c. put a white piece of paper over the satnav stuck to the screen as i though it would melt it got so hot, but the dash never did!

A friend melted the dash of his Freelander, he had a small clear plastic sucker on the windscreen and it perfectly focused the Suns Ray's which melted an arc across the dash. He thought the dealers had damaged the dash as it has just been in for a service. They were about to replace the dash for him when they worked out what had happened.
