C180 1.8 Sport auto 1998
hi there, im new the forum, ive just bought a 1998 C180 sport auto.

it has 125k on the clock but there is an issue with the running it doesnt rev over 4k and when you put foot down to drop the gear down it just dies no power atall just stays at 4k and then runs like a bag of sh*t misfiring until you turn engine off and back on then its ok again. . . .

Ive disconected battery and checked spark plugs, i connected the battery back up and now it idles fine as soon as you put foot down it just doesnt respond atall, wont even drive as it splutters all over the place. Help please guys!

Also it has a new type of key fitted which i was told the ecu had to be changed or something? i read on google somewhere that when you change the ecu you need to change the coil packs or something aswell? i thought the problem could be down to the ecu change/new key conversion and maybe they havent changed the coils????

just swapped the coil packs over earlier it runs a little better but wont go over 25-30 mph it struggles to go up any incline and wont get in 3rd now, its got worse since i cleaned the plugs and disconected the battery. it will rev to 4k but only if you touch the throttle a little bit, if you put your foot down it just does'nt do nothing but splutter, pulling my hair out here! :(

Click on Mercedes specialist finder at top right of your screen. Should be able to point you towards someone close to you.

I don't know anyone in Newport but f you're happy with a 40 min drive, you won't go wrong with Paul and Steve at Three Points in Bristol.

just had rac here to open the car as the fob has packed up all togeather, the engine will start but the alarm keeps going off and the light on the key doesnt work anymore? he said that there also isnt enough fuel getting to the engine so looks like it need a filter change or lines are blocked as the pump is surging fine. . . what do you think?

Just looked and you are a bit far for me to come and do a star test as it would probably cost me more in fuel. Sorry.

Did the rac read the fault codes when they came out.

no problem, no he didnt have the old star connection, but theres no engine management light on dash!? ive just been under car and there is a strong smell of fuel coming from the pump/filter area when its running. Could an air leak cause it to do this? maybe there is a small hole in a pipe or something i couldnt see any leaks just when running it really smelt strongly of fuel. also service was due nearly 13k ago. should i try changing fuel filter and how could i check pipes or do a pressure test on the fuel rail? im at a loss here like i said when the rac man put easy start through the air intake it responded brilliaintly so its a fuel starvation issue somewhere

The reason i said about get fault codes read was he could of checked actual values to see what was going on with the engine while it was running.

You may well have a small fuel leak at the back but not big enough to cause a puddle. Quickest and easiest way to check would be get a fuel pressure gauge connected and see what is going on with it while its running etc

when i play around with the pump/filter while its running it will run nice for a second or 2 but always goes back lumpy and then the smell of fuel is present, the exhaust is leaking loads of vapour aswell. . . who would you suggest will have a fuel pressure gauge? Thanks for your time by the way, really annoying to have a lovely motor and not fully experience it yet :(

Sounds like a fuel pressure fault to me and most like a failed regulator inside the fuel filter.

Any half decent garage will have a fuel pressure tester, its standard equipment for any mechanic.
