£35k.

You can get a lightly used E350cdi for that, a not that shabby S350cdi for that, a very lightly used C220cdi or C350cdi.

What on earth would possess you to buy this?

I am glad of cars like this, used car buyers will buy this silly thing driving demand down for nice used C and E classes

Look, a nice E300 hybrid

Absolutely spot on.
Its a niche motor for ladies who cant afford an E-coupe, further devalues the CLS and looks a but crap to be honest. If they had based it on the c class it amay have been big enough to be viable.
I dont look forward to seeing them on the road.

The CLA is a bit of an oddball. FWD and longer than a C-class!

With really ugly dumpy "junior car" car proportions like the 1 series coupe.

Makes a nearly new E350 at a grand more there seem like a steal.

I'm a bit confused. Can someone summarise the current "C" range briefly ? I had never even heard of this car. Where does it fit in ? What about the C coupe ?

Maybe something called choice

Why spend £35k on a lightly used E class when you can spend £2k on a one-owner 16 year old W140.

I think its a good looking car and people are free to spend their money as they see fit. These kind of threads are pointless and serve no purpose

Yet you chose to post anyway?

This thread discuses the sort of Mercedes you can buy that's nearly new for £35k. Something useful IMHO

While questioning the sanity of anyone who buys a new Mercedes CLA?

A very warm welcome for a prospective forum member with a brand new CLA on their drive

Condones those buying nearly new E350's. We are all entitled to our opinions, I think the CLA is a very expensive for what you get car, and it highlights the value of other cars in the MB range

Can't please everyone all the time?

Following this logic through, the result would be to ask why spend 36k on a used e350cdi when you can buy a w124/w126/w140 which are, in many respects better, for under 2k and then travel/put a deposit on a house/do whatever with the rest?

I think the problem is is that people have a "top down" view of buying things rather than a "bottom up". Want a new computer/car/phone/anything, look at the most expensive one, think "damn i can't afford that...but maybe if i scrimp/save/get into debt i can get the 3rd most expensive one...i think i deserve it, i work hard, you only live once". The trouble is (ignoring the debt, financial burden and stress it puts on people) is deep down you really want the most expensive one so are still unhappy, and still slaving away trying to upgrade.

A better approach is "i work hard and have earned my money so i'm not going to let anyone have it for nothing". So start with a £1k car, oh it's rubbish, i need to spend £2k...oh this isn't great, but £2.5k gets me something i want, i'll buy that one...then you're happy and feel you treated yourself over the £1k heap you could of had!

Still, the more people adopt the first attitude the more they'll subsidise the bargains for the rest of us!

I'm not a fan of the 216, a lot nicer than the 215 though.

Undeniably a lot of money but I'm perplexed how a junior car like a CLA is £50 within a real car like an E class of compatible age and miles

Many
My last c124 300 ce cost the pricely sum of Euro 350.00 - low mileage, full leather, sportline etc etc.

Now even disregarding the currency conversion I can choose between one of these new cars or 100 of those beautiful 124 coupes !!

But everybody to their own taste and values.

Regards

Bill

nice but not economic sense, in fact does any new car make economic sense. When all costs are taken into account depreciation is your greatest hit so cut it out and buy an old car

All very true, but you need new car buyers to order and create the demand for the second hand cars we then subsequently buy.

That said I can't see the CLA featuring in my future second hand car searching.

fleet sales are the biggest buyers and they get huge discounts in anticipation of the depreciation hit

True, but they are always black and silver ones that are pov spec.

People on here seem to like highly spec'd odd coloured cars that tend to be bought new by private buyers who have a surplus of cash over taste.
