Wasnt sure if this was BenzBin or here but I guess it's motoring related ..

Sons car is on Auto-trader.... had a couple of interested parties.... then I got this... and yes this is exactly how it was formatted to to add to the 'authenticity' of it...

"Thanks for the prompt response.I'm Okay with the condition of the Car, as i
have already go through it on the ad but just trying to make little inquiry
from you ready to buy it now as a gift for my Daughter, I'm at sea at the
moment as I'm a Navy Officer, and due to the nature of my Job.....phone
calls making and visiting of website are restricted but i squeezed out time
to check this advert and send you a Text regarding it. I really want it to
be a surprise for my Daughter i won't let her know anything about it until
it gets delivered to her, i am sure she will be more than happy with it. I
insisted on PayPal because i don't have access to my bank account online as
i don't have internet banking, but i can pay from my PayPal account, as i
have my bank a/c attached to it,Get back to me with your PayPal email and
the price so i can proceed with the payment quickly, and sorry if you don't
have an Account, you sign-up for a PayPal personal account
www.paypal.com it is very fast and easy to set up. And there is a
shipping company pick up
agent that will come for the pick up after the payment has been sorted out.

Thanks"

Pay Pal can take the money back at any time, unless you close all your bank accounts once you have their money.

I would always be suspicious of things like this! Sadly it's the way today's society has us! We can no longer take people at face value!

Paypal is okay.... If in doubt, you can check with Paypal and see if they have the guys name on file as being dodgy.

Paypal do offer buyer protection on any ebay deals....

its autotrader..not ebay...

also look at the grammar etc here...

"as i have already go through" / "phone calls making and visiting of website are restricted" /

" and send you a Text regarding it." - they emailed initially..

just so completely obvious....copy and pasted from elsewhere obviously

I would expect a Naval Officer to have a better grasp of English grammar and punctuation. :!:

A few.
Paypal is okay.... If in doubt, you can check with Paypal and see if they have the guys name on file as being dodgy.

Paypal do offer buyer protection on any ebay deals....

There is not & never has been buyer protection on any vehicle purchase through Paypal regardless of whether it's on ebay or not.

RTFM!

https://www.paypal.com/uk/webapps/mpp/buyer-protection

Eligibility Requirements

Claims can only be made for physical goods that can be posted and are not prohibited.

Buyers must raise a dispute within 45 days of a single PayPal payment for the full price of the item. If no satisfactory response is received from the seller, a claim must be filed within 20 days of raising the dispute.

Buyers cannot make multiple claims on the same payment.

Please note that if the seller has accurately described an item, but you’re just not happy with it, that doesn’t qualify for Purchase Protection

Other eligibility requirements apply. See terms and conditions

Exclusions

Complaints related to vehicles, airline travel, custom-made items and eBay classified advertisements are not covered under the Buyer Protection policy. Further exclusions apply. See User Agreement

Ask them what their name is.
I bet it's not John or Fred ;)

As OP states this is a well known scam. Paypal aside, what a lot of people don't realise is that a direct bank transfer into your account can be reversed on the same day up until about 4.30pm. I used to have a business where I would get one or two phone calls per week asking to buy a large amount of high value goods, where they wanted to pay by bank transfer, and arrange their own collection the same day. If I'd have fallen for it, the payment would have been reversed as soon as the goods were driven away.

Sold it tonight but oh what a chancer. .

It's on auto trader at 2950 , realistically expecting 2750. Guys calls and asks my rock bottom price. Car needs to go so I say 2750.

He turns up..a real wide boy btw, proceeds to examine the car etc, go for a test drive. He says great I will take it.

He brings out the cash and tells me it's 2500 , I tell him its 2750 ... He argues the toss and I hold my ground. I walk away and leave him to it. He drives off.

5 minutes later he calls and gives me a sob story about he has his wages and can up it to 2600. I say no again.

He turns up back at the house 10 minutes later with 2750.

Deal done.

I seriously wouldn't have the nerve to do that to someone, he clearly expected to be at me down and the sight of the cash was, I think, something he thought I would cave into.

Why come to argue when I already told him before he drove 40 miles what my rock bottom price was?

Guy probably has a lot of money because he argues the price on most things, something we all should do.
Grammar whilst texting is usually poor apart from oldies like me who insist on punctuation in a text.
Officers nowadays are a different entity to 30 years ago i.e. they generally came form the titled and rich. Nowadays anybody who meets the criteria can go to University, paid for by the military and when they graduate they join the forces, so officers now come from the titled, rich and council estates. Not that this is a bad thing i.e. doesn't matter where they come from as long as they are a good leader.

Can't blame him for trying - he's probably had some success with it before. You stood your ground. Happy ending

I use the same strategy on the Pat Pong market,
it works well enough there.
