E220 CDi Cab 2012
Hi Guys, just to introduce my self as a newbe to Mercedes. i just bought a E220 Cdi cab 2012 model to collect on Saturday. My previous car was Bmw 325 cab 07 model which i absolutely adore. Am a bit nervous coming from a good performance petrol to diesel. please i need your advice on what to watch out for. My first question is what modifications are available that would not void the warantee such as Ecu remap and are there any good garrage in herts for Ecu remap. Thanks

Welcome from me - a fellow escapee from BMW! Hope to be collecting my E-class coupe early next week, DVLA permitting.

How are you finding the cab?

You can be rest assured that Mercedes diesel engine is no joke. I am not really a great fan of diesel engines but if I was looking to buy one, the 350 CDI will be the ideal engine. The 350 CDI acceleration is ace! The 220 CDI is good as well and with a little remap, you are very close in performance to a 350 CDI variant. :)

Carabosse, our most distinguished honourable member will talk you through the model you have opted. He is coming from BMW as well and has been happy being part of our little community. Hein, Carabosse, isn't it?

Yes I've been a member of MBO longer than most active members on here! But have still to collect my first Merc. Lol!

I had an E46 325i saloon before my current modified E92 335i (366bhp/512Nm). I shall be intrigued to see if tuners such as GAD can make the E350CDI Coupe as ballistic as my current car.

I have always wondered why people buy the 335i instead of the M3. Although, the 335i comes with the performance package but it still would not give you that thrilling experience as an M3. It's a very capable car but a little too M3 wannabe in my opinion. I do like the way the 335i looks but will rather have an M3 all day every day purely for looks and performance purposes.

I have always wondered why people buy the 335i instead of the M3.

Because:

(1) It is about £17k cheaper but with about £1500 of mods can make a standard M3 feel gutless. The 335i is the tuners' favourite.

(2) Many people think it looks better than an M3 with all that car's lumps and bumps.

Hope that helps. :)

The discerning few will object to that. Despite the M series badges & power, a 335i will still be a regular car as opposed to a proper M series vehicle. For me, it doesn't matter what people say or which they think looks better, there is a reason why the M series lineup exist and it is purely for that purpose that I would want one. Same as the AMG lineup. A regular CLS V8 is fast, with extra mod can match up almost anything on the road, most people will tell you that they prefer the regular CLS with extra mod but the discerning few will rather drive the CLS AMG over the regular model because of:

1) Thrilling factor
2)Track record
3)Upgraded performance brakes, calipers, embossed AMG seats
4) Better resale value
5) AMG brand notoriety etc.

Infact, the list is endless but then again......... Anyway, thanks Carabosse for your input!

Sorry @ OP for the slight off topic. :)

Anyway, thanks Carabosse for your input!

With apologies to the OP, I would add just one more point. The next generation 335i and M3 will both have the straight six 3.0 twin, turbo engine in different states of tune. The n/a 4.0 V8 in the current M3 is being dropped.

BMW are recognising reality: sales of the E92 M3 have been below projections.

But, I agree, there will always be those who will be prepared to pay for a badge.... be it M or AMG. ;)

I am hoping for very vigorous performance from the E350CDI given its 620Nm in standard form and, as I understand it, up to 750Nm tweaked.

Am yet to collect from the dealer, collection is on Saturday. Will definately let you know how it goes though i test drove one with the dealer and the pull off was faster than my E93 cab. Need to know if it remapping would not invalidate the warantee.

The position, as has been explained to me by a respected firm of BMW tuners, is legally more complex than just valid/invalid.

The manufacturer must prove that the modification caused the fault which you require fixing under warranty and - as I understand it - manufacturers have been succesfully challenged when trying to wriggle out of doing work under warranty on modified cars.

Looks like I am going to beat you to it. Collecting my C207 on Wednesday morning. :)

However, I am collecting a diecast model of it today! :D

Hello and welcome to the forum,

We can offer fully bespoke ECU remapping for your 220,

Expected performance gains: 45-50 BHP and 85-90 NM of torque, we have developed a lot for this engine over the last 3 months or so.

http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showthread.php?t=118720

I believe the engines are the same and the engine management is also identical.

Regards

Anthony @ GAD
