Spoke with Alex, suggested that since the car is showing no symptons of anything to do with possible drive chain failure best policy currently would be leave it. He hasnt changed one on an M271 since 2011! Apparently they are designed for the lifetime of the vehicle and it is quite rare for one to fail.

As above, it is hard for us to advise based on anything other than our experience, which is that only a small number of 271 engines suffer chain/sprocket problems.
Based on the cost to replace chain and tensioner, we do not see it as a cost effective precaution.
However, with higher mileages, rattling chains etc that would be another matter, but have seen several over 200,000 miles now on original parts, without problems.

Smart + others :)
The best time to listen to the timing chain is after and oil filter change, before the oil pressure builds up. We have done quite a few chains, some too late and a few because of the rattle on start up.

Cruch noise (sometimes) right after start, and occasional EML light (timing off, because there was CPS issues shown in fault codes, but sensor was good?) were indications of my colleague car chain problems.

I posted one picture here where couple of strtch chains were clearly shown... ;)

Thankfully mine is very smooth and showing no symptons of anything untoward.

Thanks for the info, something to look out for.

Hi Alex, I have a 2007 W209 CLK 220 Diesel. Am I safe with this car, are there any timing chain issues? Just that I had the a 3 series last year (the dreaded N47 diesel engine) and the chain snapped, cost me £3000 for a second hand engine fitted. It would finish me off if this car did that to me!

Your chain will last until the very end of your car.
