W211 Phone Cradles

I have a W211 E320CDI that has the Audio 10 and phone option. It has the centre arm rest clamshell compartment with a connector inside for the phone. On lifting out the tray there is a thick cable that goes from the connector on the tray under the centre console, and a thinner cable that is terminated, erm, nowhere!

It is just hanigng there. What does it do? Do I need it to hook up the Merc BT gadget?
