well, as I was bored the other day, i reset the trip computer at the top of a hill. I used no throttle at all on the descent of the hill, just to see how many hundred MPG it was possible to get the display to register.

I was a little disappointed, however, when i found out that 99.9 MPG is the maximum possible to be displayed :(:(:(:(

this is on a pre facelift 203. has anyone else had a MB that would register a different figure?

I must admit, seeing 99.9MPG for about a quarter of a mile did feel good! shame i couldnt take a pic, as I was driving!

They aren't using fuel coasting down hill...so technically doing more than 99.9mpg...but they can't display more than 99.9.

i was aware of that. i just wondered WHY they only display up to 99.9 and if all models are the same, or some are set at a more modest level? I know the VW Isla had, would show the economy instantaneously, trip average AND overall average (which resets itself after 100hrs driving on the MB) and the VW would show well over 100mpg in the same circumstances.

I wonder why MB dont put instantaneous MPG on the computer like every other manufacturer that I can think of, does? (and MB used to with the analogue guage like the 124/126 etc had)

I dont suppose it can be added either, can it?

The only gauge 0n the 124,129,140 was a vacuum gauge that gave an indication of your driving style verses fuel, if you tried to keep it in the green, then you would never get anywhere

Is there anything to be gained/learned from knowing your instantaneous fuel consumption? My Vauxhall has it, and apart from it briefly showing its min reading of 7.1mpg if you hoof it from the off, IMHO it's meaningless. My Vauxhall will also show fuel used for a journey or till you zero it (unlike my MB) ....... that's more useful for showing eg how much fuel used while on holiday etc

ive always liked to have instantaneous as sometimes i challenge myself to daft challenges with the computer, just to keep my economy high!

your MB should have 3 settings on the fuel computer. trip MPG, MPG since reset, and range left. thats what mine has anyhow!

that was the one i meant, Malcolm. surely in this age of electronic EVERYTHING it couldnt be too hard to get this info from the ECU?

It does. :) But the Vauxhall has the option of fuel used in gallons from reset to the next time you reset it.

I do often drive my MB on the trip mpg/speed/distance & see if I can get mid to high 20s mpg

mine certainly does, as it just happened that I had that particular function up on the display last time it hit 100 hours!

I have a shot of the CLS instrument cluster. 6 miles average 55mpg, 94.2 mpg.
In a car that does 0-60 in 6 seconds an not on a hill, staggering!
