I'll admit it - the S211 comes in handy now and again...

Yup - I ticked the "Autopilot-Tronic" option when I ordered it.

. . . although I should add that this is the first time she has ever come home on the end of a tow rope. Or anything other than her own power I hasten to add.

And this only happened 400 yds from home too! Rotor arm broke, breaking the central carbon contact in the dizzy cap in the process. And I haven't got the spares in stock either.

They all wanted work and that is why I bought them. I bought 10 XJ6's from one outlet, they all wanted pistons and I could do this in one day, it was great back then, blue car Monday, beige on Tues and so on. Just a hobby that gave me free motoring and some super cars :D

Well, if the truth be told, it wasn't exactly the car's fault.

The rotor arm had broken earlier in the day, caused I think by me not fitting the dizzy cap back on properly. It broke clean in two with no collateral damage (it would have broken at the first slight movement of the engine when I cranked it after refitting). So I superglued it back together and left it to cure for an hour or so, then refitted. It fired up ok afterwards, and I did my timing/dwell checks, then took it round the block for a quick test run.

About 400 yds from home, giving it a quick squirt, it died. Obviously the centrifugal force proved too much for the repair. I knew what it was the instant it happened. but because it was spinning much faster, this time it took out the carbon brush. The rest of the cap is OK.

Doh!

You are in the "trade" so to speak. Most people have 1 car and keep it 2-3years?

Just because im in the trade doesnt mean I buy cars for the sake of it!!

I often get bored and want to try something else or a bargain comes my way that I cant say no to.

The Jags of these year did give outstanding value for the money, I had loads of Mk10s as well, they were quiet and good ride. even today the E types take some beating for the looks. When I lived in Herts, there was an old boy in Kings Langley who made D type bodies. That guy was so clever, a wing or bonnet he could reproduce by cutting out loads of small pieces of ally, laying them on top of a good one, scale the pieces down a touch, weld them all together and on the finished job, I could take the part home, etch prime and spray with virtually no filler at all.

They were the happiest days of my life :D:D

And owners pay £100 and more for the Bosch and other make, back then in the 70's we could go to the Lucas agent and buy all the alternator bearings for pence, pleas any other part, every thing was repairable back then.

The good old days :D:D

This is for the Lucas 22D6 distributor.

Points and condensors - feeler gauges - dwell angles and ignition timing - the good old days! I bet half the people driving today wouldn't recognise a contact set if you presented them with one.

I've quite enjoyed getting under my fingernails all mucky the last couple of days. It was about time though. The centre carb (Not SUs - 3 x 45DCOEs!) had a problem with it's accelerator pump and wouldn't provide a squirt of fuel when the throttle was pressed. A quick dismantle in situ and the problem was found - unfortunately all due to lack of use - it had dried out and sediment had clogged up the outlet channels. It was nice to fix it though - simple too!

The next list of jobs is as follows:

1. Fit the carb service kits and clean everything up carb-wise

2. Buy new bits and fit them, as follows:
a. engine mounts (2 of)
b. engine steady bar/bush (1 of)
c. HT lead set (1 of)
d. front shock absorbers (2 of)
e. rear shock absorber/spring assemblies (4 of)
f. rear door window seal (1 of)
g. speedometer cable (1 of)

Then I should have a good useable car again!

Again, the parts are really reasonable in my view. That list above, again with the VAT included, comes to almost exactly £500. Not bad I reckon.

I shoulds have that little lot done just in time to see the Autumn weather set in.

Would it not be worth doing the photo cell conversion for the points and have electronic ignition or do you want to keep as original

Hmm - I've thought about that since I first bought the car! Truth is, the original setup has never let me down. I've let it down (see yesterday for details!) but I've always found the distributor really easy to service and keep in line.

The carbs on the other hand... :( But again, they are old and in desperate need of some TLC. That's why I got the service kits for them, but I still haven't plucked up the courage to remove and dismantle them. It's a big job, and once it has started there's no turning back. Plus, I really need a parts washer or petrol bath to clean them up properly. One day!
