Help please, would be grateful for any recommendations or advice:

My car starts from cold (at least so far) and never let me down, last week I switched off the engine in traffic and when I went to re-start i noticed that the engine seem to crank over for much longer than usual but it started, then again a few days later I switched it off and tried to re-start it again within 10 mins and whilst it cranked over it refused to start. After several attempts it still did not start so I left it for 1 hour and then tried again, this time it started no problem.

I've had this failure to start now a few times and it happened again to me today at a drive through, this time the engine was running while I was waiting in traffic and then cut out and refused to start (cranking over but not starting).

30 miniutes later I tried to start it and it started no problem, I drove home 3 miles and then it cut out again while I was reversing in to my drive - now it does not start

SO afr yes, typically when engine i swarm - i've not experienced it not starting from cold.

Lights are all good and the cranking seems to be fast, when it has failed to start I have cranked it over several times before decideding to leave it and then returning to it after 45-60 mins, then it starts no problem.

How can I test the one on the car? could you tell me where to find it please?

I was also wondering if it could be the fuel filter, I've had the car for > 8 years and don't recall ever changing it.

Crankshaft position sensor is most likely culprit not camshaft.

Crank position sensor is located on the bell housing at the back of the engine.

Do I get to it from under the car? or can it be accessed from under the bonnet?

Under bonnet is easier

top right if you are standing over the engine

Yes CPS for this fault, I had to lay on the engine in mine to get to it and do most by feel, only the one screw and over the starter motor

Gents,

With the aid of the picture and your notes I was able to quickly change the CPS, thank you!

The one I took out had some oil on it and I could see a few metal debris on the end of the orginal sensor - not sure if the metal debris may have been causing the issue.

Have been for a drive to warm up the engine with a few stop starts of the engine and so far it looks good - will post another update in a weeks time to confirm.

Once again thank you!

If possible I would be grateful for a similar picture to show me the location of the fuel filter on my E500 W211, may as well change this over now that I have a new one at hand.

Just realised, the fuel filter is in the pump, in the tank.

If you aren't having problems then I wouldn't change it :)
