A few days ago my car will just rev and not move forward or backwards when in gear and afta a few revs it will lurch forward. Took my car to the dealers today as I have a warranty direct policy.

Dealer just rang asking if I had work done on the gearbox as there is oil leak from gearbox and the gear box sump has 2 bolts broken. I have only had 2 services done on the car, B service done by MBS and an A service done by a local garage next to me.

The question is how did the 2 bolts get broken on the sump? The dealer seemed baffled by it and I reapeated to him that I have never had anything done to the car.

HELP PLEASE...

The remains of the2 bolts should come out OK, it may have had a fluid change before you bought it, the fault sound low on fluid to me.

But what I am now thinking is that warranty direct may now reject the claim as the dealer seems to think. I know there is something about them not covering oil leaks but don't know for sure...

I await the stealers BIG BILL...

You have to wait to see the response of the dealer to WD. I don't think he can assume anything, simply pass the facts to WD. Also suspect WD won't pay as well though as its not 'failure' of the component ...

Pilot bush plus filter and fluid, it should not be too bad

Dealer just said it would be £600 if WD don't pay out. Is that right? How much should I expect to pay?

update: Merc stealers were going to charge me £600 for the work but I declined and took it to church motor services in beckenham who quoted £260 Ffor the same work.

And ohhh, WD rejected the claim "we only pay for oil leaks that necessitates the engine removal or gearbox removal"...

Ok, I got a call from the garage to say there was a lot of metal in the sump from where it has been driven with no oil in it and that it may affect/damage the gearbox but I will have to wait until they put everything together tomorrow.

Just wanted to find out from you guys if this will/can be the case and to what extent will/can the damage be?

You just cannot tell till the fluid is back in and tried, in the time we had the glycol problem we had pictures up showing lots of debris but the boxes all worked just fine

Hi guys, The dealer seems to think the bolts were put in incorrectly at the last transmission fluid change which was in 2009, my question is would it be unreasonable to lay blame and expect a fix from the dealer that did the fluid change as it was about 4 years ago and the car has changed hands at least once after?

No chance, 4 years ago is too long time.

That would never stand up, its just too long and no proof that they were the last ones to touch it :(

update:

Picked car up today, driving well. But I was told that there was a lot of metal still in the box and that they could not guarantee anything and that I need to come back after 1000 miles to change the transmission fluid and filter again.

Is / would this be the case?

An additional expense but I would agree with the garage - it will hopefully capture more of the remaining contamination, both in fluid suspension and the filter. Better safe than sorry I would say.

You used to be able to get magnetic sump plugs to capture metal contamination but not sure they are still around (or for MB gearboxes) especially as a lot of parts are no longer made of ferrous material.

Thanks Dave but do you think this can/may damage the gearbox?
