A while ago I rode past a old man with an SLK and asked if he wanted to sell it, he said no.

Today he located me through my cycling and said he would sell because they are retired they don't need to cars.

I'm going to look later today but he said it has 48k miles, it's deep red/move. Year 2000.

What should I look for. I think he's has it for ever.
Thanks in advance.

Check that the roof functions without any problems. If there are any it could be expensive to put right, otherwise pretty good cars.

I had a bright red 230 kompressor on a V plate. Lovely car; no rust at all on mine, not a speck.

I'd go with what others have said - just the roof works and rust. Anything else on these is surprisingly easy to fix.

There was a facelift to the R170 SLK in February 2000 which sorted out some problem areas in the earlier cars.

The quickest way to tell a facelift car is to check if it has indicator repeaters in the mirror housings. If it doesn't it's a pre-facelift model.

As has been pointed out, check for rust. There will almost certainly be a patch under the boot release, and wheelarches can be bad too.

The 4-cylinder 'Kompressor' cars are a bit more frugal than the SLK320 'six'. The performance across the range is pretty consistent (except for the 'fireball' SLK32 AMG) but the six cylinder car is smoother and more refined.

Check the roof operation several times. It's generally very reliable, but if left unused the microswitches can play up. It should take arounf 25 secs to raise or lower.

Check the rear brake backplates for rust. Expensive to replace.

All seems to work well except one key fob will not remote lock/unlock but starts the car, door cards by handle seem to have come unstuck. The roof needs to be re-lacquered as thats peeled? No rust on arched or boot
He's has it for six years. Air con woorks well and has rest feature.
One thing, although the roof worked very well he told me you must have the engine running or it flattens the battery, I tried it a few times and it worked well/quick.
What does the Kompressor part mean?

I don't know what to offer for this car, "We buy any car" values it @£2,200.
It needs the roof painting and a key fob to start, I know when you get there they knock you down.

have a look on trader and ebay, this will give you a 'feel' for current pricing, remember most cars will be knocked down by at least 10%

I've rang a few cars this afternoon, (4K plus cars) Surprisingly people said I was the first call they'd had (last 10 days) which makes We Buy Any Cars offer of £2200 high. People over price their cars?
