Error code P1189 an P1192 - whats a common cause?

Hi All,

My ML270 CDI auto (W163 2001 model, 130K miles) has had problems with going into limp mode for a few months. Ive changed the maf sensor (it was dead ;-) ) ,cam and crank sensors as they were erroring, glow plugs and "starter pack" and just now replaced the inlet manifold as the old flaps were completely shot and the errors were pointing to it.
Its got new oil and filters.

When I initially turn the car on its revving fine but just after setting off it will go into limp mode and stay below 3000rpm. Turn the engine off, then back on and you can be out of limp mode again. When she's not in limp mode kick down works and the turbo cuts in and it flies! .... but thats never for very long :(

So my latest errors are "P1189 Inlet port general shutoff error" (we think the port motor is good but we're going to take a closer look - we didnt change while doing the inlet manifold as the old manifold was offering no resistance and was spinning loose so we guessed the motor had won that battle. ;-) )

The mystery error is "P1192 B40 (Oil sensor (oil level, temperature and quality) ) Synchronization pause error.

Now im suspecting the P1189 is just a symptom of the sensor error, but where is this oil sensor and do they go bad or will it be a bad connection (as the snapon diag reader said was a potential problem).

Strangely enough my old friend mr Google cant find much on these codes, can anyone help?

Only way to really tell is to replace the motor, when you refitted the manifold, did you reconnect the oil level sensor, you would have had to disconnect it to get the wiring loom out of the gap in the manifold, sensor is in the side of the sump under manifold side.......

Hi Cole,

Thanks for the reply, when i say "we/ I" in my thread if you can reach in and unbolt and replace ive done the work, anything a little more lairy like the inlet manifold has been farmed out to a friendly local mechanic. :)

Will check the oil sensor is all plugged in. :)

The car is a work horse for towing so trying to keep the cost down which is a tricky balance. :)

Hi all,

Thanks for the help from all you forum people, especially Cole!
After talking to a few people Ive had a look at the swirl flap motor with my mechanic mate and he changed it with the inlet manifold in place.

Removing the passenger side wheel and liner and having the engine stone cold are the trick. :D

Shame on those so called Indi specialist (not on this forum) who said the swirl flap motor would be £400 plus to replace and the inlet manifold had to be removed to do it when i called them.

So if ive learnt anything from this its change the swirl motor and the inlet manifold at the same time, anything else is a false economy.

Ive now got the old inlet manifold, swirl flaps and mechanism are shot (obviously!) but you could try your hand at removing the flaps as per this forum. Ive got the old dead swirl flap motor kicking about. Does anyone want them to try and refurb/ experiment? Im in Bournemouth, Dorset if you want to collect.

Turns out my mechanic snipped the 4 wires going through the manifold and reconnected with crimp on connectors :Oops:. I think the engine managements not happy with this arrangement and is intermittently getting a false reading for the oil sensor so will see what we can do stabilize this!
