e-class to c-class and back again...

I had a e-class estate for about 9 years until last year. I loved everything about it apart from, latterly, the rust, the fuel economy and the running costs.

I turfed it in for an 08 c-class estate 220 sport. Lovely car, however I really miss the space in the old e-class. Also my parents aren't getting any younger and they find it a bit of a struggle getting in and out. So I'm thinking of going back to an e-class estate.

The only things I don't want to compromise on are fuel economy and trim level. I like the COMMAND,heated seats, electric tailgate etc. I'm also prepared to part ex and pay a couple of 000 extra.

Any suggestions from you what model/year I should consider?

A facelift S211 would be a fine car - what's the budget?

I doubt you'll see much difference in the running costs between an E and C in 220 guise. Don't go near a 200, it will use more fuel.
Spec wise, what you want should exist so you just need to find one.

Budget depends on what I'd get for the c-class. I payed 15k for it a year ago, so with the depreciation of that plus a couple of grand, about 15-16k for the e-class. That sound about right?

Need a bit more info, did you get a good deal at £15k or.....?

I would guess you lost £3k straight away and another £3k over the course of the year is more realistic.
But you may have got a really good deal and get £20k back? ;)

Ok - thanks for the info. That's probably more a bit more realistic!

I felt I got a pretty good deal at 15k.
It was up in local indi dealer for 16.5k with 38 on the clock and a few minor probs (rear parking sensors not working) which have been sorted. Good spec... panoramic roof, lighting pack. Milage now around 54k.

What do you think. Private sale and buy for cash or part ex?

I reckon £12k privately and you will sell pretty quickly.

But check webuyanycar.com as well, about the age and mileage they like, they can sometimes surprise you....in a nice way.

The problem is for a seller that there are simply so many cars already in the market, we all believe ours is worth more and sometimes its difficult standing back and accepting a traders valuation.

Personally I think the days of a cash deal are gone, the dealer either makes a couple of bob on the trade in or trades it out at a value given to him in a little book. My preference would be to part ex with some idea of trade value (www. wisebuyer can sometimes be useful) and try to bargain the price of the car you are buying down to a level where you are happy to buy.

Good luck,

I think it will be some time till a well speced S211 turns up with all the options the OP would like. When I was looking 18 months ago there were a lot and I mean a lot of very poorly specced 211's both saloons and not so many estates. Would £16k not get a newer 212? I would have thought so.

I know some might think it odd but trim colour could be a factor for the OP if he cares about such things. It's the part of the car I look at more than any other (well, apart from looking through the windscreen), so to me it's at the top of my list.

It seems 99.999% of 212s have black leather, and the all beige trim was only on the SE, in the "sport" you get half black half beige if you want "beige"... personally I think it looks rubbish... plus I am the usual "elegance" buyer.. I want comfort, trim, and speed. Handling isn't what sells me a car, now they do the "base" SE and the sport.. where's my supersonic sofa with all the bells and whistles?

211s still offered all beige leather and wood with a decent trim and comfort level.. I think current models are now offering decent non-black interiors again.

For me when the time comes it'll be a deal breaker... which means I'm going to have to keep my old girl running until second-hand facelift 212s come down in price... or maybe look non-MB.

The 212 is also a lot harder riding than the 211, I had a facelift 211 Avantgarde and then the 212 Avantgarde, the 211 was like a magic carpet in comparison.

I agree on the interior too, I have been banging on about this for the last 5 years, the launch car was an elegance with a lovely light interior, but not available in the UK. Shame.
