Well spent the full day removed the inside if the 1st cat re assembled and still very smokey,
it leaves a trail of smoke when its drove, its running very rich, car has just had a new turbo fitted and a new maf sensor.

When i rev it fast there is a buzzing noise not sure where from

It smokes all the time now more when under load, so swirl flaps and inlet manifold could be the problem?

Or could it have injector issues ?

Any thoughts appreciated

cheers

Check your compression and then the injectors as you said in your other thread the smoke is white, does the smoke smell at all?

What kind of smoke is it? I doubt very much its the injectors. How is the engine running? Any misfires or management lights?

If smoke is black I think its boost pressure related... Was smoke there before turbo replacement, or started it right after it? Are all turbo hoses checked for splits and all fittings secured? Turbo actuator right in its place and moving, controller ok (no vacuum leaks, all lines fitted both turbo and egr)? Cooler not leaking (and not blocked (clean inside)?

i removed the egr last night, oil was dripping out of it not loads , the whole thing was caked though, looking into the plastic inlet manifold and it dosnt look mucg better.

It drove slightly better after the egr clean still down on power, the turbo sounds healthy and quite loud, but as i owned the ml one day before the turbo failed before i`m not sure what the turbo noise should be like.
Fault codes was maf sensor , and the turbo controller was showing at fault, the inde over the phone said that shouldnt cause the smoke issue, though he also said it has no egr !!!!
The guy ripped me off , £945 to recondition my old turbo, fix fuel leak and check fault codes seems high to me.
he said it had new oil lines to turbo as standard, and the turbo failure could have been due to lack of oil changes.
I bought the ml with a fault and that was no kick down, owner thought swirl flaps, next day turbo fails, 2 weeks later ml back running but no boost, i fitted maf kickdown and boost all ok, then it starts smoking and running rough. When i drove it away from the inde there was mega black smoke and oil in the exhaust this eventually burnt off, i`d presume was from previous turbo failure, that was why i removed the 1st cat internals yesterday as figured it is choked, and had gas escape from the turbo-cat seal which i thought was back pressure, turns out the inde re used the seal which is worn and this is allowing gas to escape, i refitted it damaged side up so its not as bad now.

engine actually sounds and runs ok, bit sluggish when cold, no misfires and no lights on.
When reving fast there is a noise though, maybe a swirl flap stuck a pulley or bearing but the noise is above 3k revs and stops when not under revs, dosn`t sound like engine internals, i thought it was turbo failure again as was a similar sound to that, but it isn`t.
Would driving the car when as smoky risk further damage or would that burn off the issue ?

Well lets go back to basics and start from the beginning.....its all gettting way out of hand cleaning this and guessing at that....

Do you have any fault codes, if so what are they? You say its down on power, is it limp mode power?

i cleaned the oil from the intercooler today made slight difference , checked all turbo hoses for splits none found

Drove vehicle still running rough and smokey

got to a hill and it wasn`t right, just made it home, the 1st injector had came loose and hit the bonnet, the thing that holds it in place was still attached but bend up wards, like the force was to much

the inde said it had been a botched job previously and who ever done it had made a bracket up , he told me this before it happened but i wasn`t aware it meant this, 1st merc and last.

car will be sold for parts i think , i blame poor maintenance and botched repairs though . the rocker cover has a hole where the bracket was ripped off, probably needs a new cylinder head , i give up costing to loads and havn`t even done 100 miles in it !

It's a shame to hear the problems you've had bud, but I can't say it's fair to write off a complete marque because you've owned one that's been mistreated in the past and is no fault of the manufacturer.

I'm on my 5th rehomed staffie after all.

i will try and put right the previous problems with this, but its going to cost me , just hope the cylinder head is`nt needing replaced, i love the interior and external looks, and i know its previous mis-treatment thats caused all this , is 125k much for one of these ? ,

125k is nothing for one of these. Ours is on 114000 miles and still going strong and other members I'm sure will have ones with much higher mileages.

My CLK270 is on 130K and going strong. I think it'd be wise to invest in some preventative maintenance, like having the EGR disabled and the swirl flaps removed etc

The 270 is a good engine if treated well, mines on 135k and no sign of it stopping, I suspect others parts to fail before the engine does.

lol, meant 135k miles

Yes I guessed so! ;) Mine makes then.... 230k ???

Lump itself is great, If chassis wouldn't rust so badly, it would be a excellent car!
