CLK320s of various ages....
Hi Everyone!

Firstly, as this is my debut post here, I'd just like to say thanks for letting me join. I've been fiddling with all sorts of cars over the years so hopefully I'll have something to contribute in the future....

Secondly, I could use a little help - my GL320cdi (2009 x164) currently has 21" AMG wheels on it which look great but as I'm going to be using this car in the snow, I need some smaller diameter (and narrower) wheels to enable both more ground pressure and more sensibly priced winter tyres.

On Ebay, I see 19" dia wheels being sold as having come off GLs but when I measure the clearance between the outer face of the front callipers and the inner face of the wheels, it's going to be tight - maybe only 6 or 7mm of clearance (assuming the inner faces of the wheels to be of similar geometry).

Has anyone any experience of 19" wheels on their GLs? The dealer says 20" is the smallest they would recommend but they believe the 19" to be OK (based on the part numbers I supplied them with) but I'd like 'real world' experience if possible.

Thanks in anticipation :)

It is the ET of the wheel that is important, the ET measurement is the distance that the wheel sits on the axle either inward or out wards.

Take a look on you wheels and this ET number will be cast into one of the spoke on the rear.

The correct ET is about 54 for a GL. The higher the number, the further in the wheels will sit, lower number and the further out they will sit.

19" x 8.5j and ET of 56 will be just fine.

Many thanks for that. The wheels for sale have the correct offset as quoted in the manual (ET56) so it looks like I'll have to take a gamble.

The strange thing is; I can't imagine how the 18" wheels would fit. They simply wouldn't fit over the front calliper. Oh well....

Yes the 18" are listed, good point on clearing the caliper from the diameter, I am always thinking from the wheel sitting too far in.

Yes, it was the clearance on the calliper that I was worried about with the 19" option. There'll only be about 1/4" hence my wondering if any other members use 19" wheels [successfully] on their GLs.

I have never seen a thread where a problem has come up with the calipers. You are safe with 19".

Just find your car in this list and look at the permitted wheel and tyre combinations: http://www.mercedes-benz.de/content...ries/tyres_and_wheels/tires_and_rim.0001.html

18" on X164 carry a few restrictions: not in combination with SA code 845, only for vehicles with EC homologation code e1*2001/116*0340*12

Thank you for that - much appreciated. The 19" rims are quoted as suitable and appear to just have enough inside diameter to clear the callipers.

According to the certificate of conformity (ubereinstimmungsbescheinigung), the car was supplied with the 21" AMG wheels and does not have the code you quote; bearing out my previous belief that 18"s won't fit.

Is it possible the front brakes could have been uprated (larger dia rotor?)? They are much larger than those fitted to a friend's ML (164) but then, the GL is heavier...

Thanks again to all who have posted help with this query - very kind of you to take the time.

1999 CLK430, 2007 VITO 3.0V6 , W124's (1994 320TE , 1993 220TE ) , 07 2.5 X-Type
Will ET13 8.5J and 225 45 17 go on a W124 Estate ?

As above looking for a set of 17 's for my W124 estate seen some nice deep dish Monoblock style But with an ET 13 .The Max offset on the factory cars seems to be 28 with 17 X 235 , as 30 with 8.5J and 245 on alloywheelsdirect is on a wide arch model. But I have seen lots with real arch fillers.
Looks Like I can fit 225 's on an 8.5j although that is the "minimum " width
does this mean they are "stretched " or is it all within tolerance ?

Thanks

Hi all, just wondering if anyone has put a different/smaller diameter wheel with all terrain tyres on an ml300 (59 plate) ? Only asking as the kids have horses and sometimes we need to pull the trailer out of muddy fields if you have, what size wheels/tyres did you use.
TIA

I am looking to replace my tired alloys. The most likely will be to replace like with like. However there are a set I quite like but they are listed as being for the Vito. I have seen elsewhere that W204 C Class and Vito are the same wheel fitting, is that to be relied upon ?

only way to know would be to get the wheel size information from the rear of the alloy and compare it to the sizes that were available as options,

Could do with some wheel advice please.

I have a 2001 E320 CDI Estate. I'm interested to know if I can fit a set of wheels which are size 7.5 J x 16. ET 46. I believe the wheels currently on it are 7J x 16 (not sure of Et number). I don't understand what the ET number is ? I've seen it described as an offset but have no understanding of what that means ? Any helpful advice would be really appreciated. Thanks a lot. Kev

Hello, the ET is the amount the wheels sit either in or out, the correct ET on your car is ET37, the higher the number the further in the wheels will sit and vice versa , so in terms of mm the wheels with an ET of 46 will sit 9mm further in, they could foul the calipers.

Once I have swapped the wheels over on my R129 I shall be selling the 19 inch wheels that are currently fitted to it. Am I right in thinking the stud pattern on Mercedes is 5 x 112 and that this is the same bolt pattern as used on some BMW's and VW/Audi's?

The only reason I ask is obviously it will improve my chances of selling them if they will fit other makes of car. :)
