Hi all,
No major posts for a while, because I've had no issues with the car for a good 4-5k miles.
Could any members, though, advise as to whether I should take action on the following:
On Wednesday 30/12/15 on a short local trip, I experienced what appeared to noticeable slippage in the gearing and the car kept feeling like it was in neutral when pulling away. This manifested itself over the course of a 4 to 5 mile round trip.
I called Autodeutsche in Camden and had the car booked in for today for a check over. The car has done 158k miles.
That apparent problem with the gearbox seems to have been an isolated incident on the day, because afterwards I switched the gear shift setting to the ’S’ (sport) mode, and the slippage at pulling away stopped immediately. After a day or so, I switched back to ‘E’ (economy) and since that first switch to ’S’ the box seems to have worked fine. This has included a trip down to East Kent coast and back yesterday, a round trip of 160 miles. Smooth changes and kick down all fine etc...
I am wondering whether it may all have been down to the stick not being in quite the correct place in the shifter? Basically, whatever it was, it seems to have been a one-off problem on one day/trip and not, apparently, an ongoing problem. I have done over 300 miles since with no symptoms.
I have deferred the visit to the workshop, and have another longish trip tomorrow (to Bristol and back), a round trip of 250 miles, so I will see how I get on over the next couple of days.
If anyone, though, has specific knowledge of this symptom, and why it might initially only be an isolated occurrence, I'd appreciate a heads up. I have read that the 4-speed boxes can require reconditioning at around this level of mileage. I have an estimate of £1-1.5k all-in for this.
Cheers, n Happy New Year!
