I'd really like some assistance in clarifying this.

As some might know, I'm currently looking for a w212 e-class, here in Japan. A friend of my wife is currently scanning the auctions that he attends, to help me find a good one. He works in the motor industry, selling & modifying cars etc, so I'm guessing he knows what he's talking about.

Obviously I'm also scanning the advertisements myself looking for my car. I found this one:- http://s.kakaku.com/kuruma/used/item/13267765/

It's advertised as an E350, avantgarde, which is what I'm looking for (apparently white cars are more expensive at the moment too), and it's at the price I'm happy to pay for one. When we showed this advert to my wife's friend, he's informed us that some of the 2009 w212's actually have the engine of a pre-w212 eclass, which I guess is a w211 engine, and that even though it's an e350, it might actually only be 3000cc. Of course if you look at the advert it does say it's 3500cc. So, anyway, our friend is now checking with his other dealer friends to check this out for us.

I'm not doubting that he's being genuine or sincere, but I would like to get some more clarity on this from some of the forum members that would know about it, so that I can have a clear picture in my own mind. It's tough trying to be clear when language is being translated for you. My wife, who is translating what her friend says, isn't as detail specific as I am, so in order to make sure I know what's going on, I'd like to dissect this matter with people that speak my language.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks. And could you tell me if & why I should be looking at making sure I have one or the other? Are there known issues with either of them? I assume the M276 is the newer of the two, so should I make sure that's the one I'm getting?

Also, I'd like to know if and how there's any way I could tell which engine the car I'm looking at has.

Thanks for the information, it's really useful. At least now I have a clearer idea of what's going on.
