Morning

Any help on this would be very helpful , my car which has done 90k miles went into Limp mode a few weeks back and I did all the normal checks but decided to get a star test done on it - it came up with several faults relating to the Turbo actuator being in the wrong position so I started looking into this problem.

When the problem occurs the car would be put into Limp mode and often if I turned the car off and restarted it would be ok again for a while - when it does go wrong the actuator arm would get stuck half way up and then not move freely until turn the ignition off and then with the ignition back on it would do its test and then would be fine.

I then purchased a turbo and actuator from ECP and replaced all of the gaskets and refitted the turbo and actuator - same problem car would go into limp mode and errors would point to actuator being in the wrong position. I therefore got the ECP turbo and actuator changed under warranty for another one - this one was ok for a week but then the same issue.

I have checked the EGR and that was relatively clean - certainly not clogged up

I replaced the exhaust back pressure sensor as I know these can cause problems but still the fault remains

I still have the same problem and I cant see that it can be another faulty turbo/actuator - help

Maybe you have a cracked exhaust manifold chucking debris into the turbo, something that has been seen before. The debris would certainly jam the turbo.

Thanks Steve will take a look but why would recycling the ignition then cure the problem for a time

Thanks

Unless the fault remains current, everytime the ignition is cycled it will go away until reoccurrence

If the Inlet port shutoff motor is not running correctly would that consequently put the vehicle into limp mode hence giving the error where the actuator is in the wrong position ? this is the only code that comes up from Star - all boost sensors etc are showing everything else is within parameters

Thanks

The ips can throw turbo faults yes. But as Steve said the exhaust manifolds can cause problems as well.

As Terry has said, the IPS can draw so much power it cant power the turbo regulator, the feed for the turbo is the same feed as the IPS motor. The ECU will pick on the turbo as its fault code as its last in line for current.

In effect, its throwing you a curve ball fault code.

Ok - quick update :(

Inlet port shutoff motor are working fine - checked whilst the bits were off.
Exhaust manifolds checked and replaced no cracks/problems other than an indication of a worn valve stem seal.

Just finished putting it back together and she drives perfectly again but i know that in a day or so its going to put me back into limp mode with the same error. Very strange this one

Empty garage, awaiting new toy :)
First check the manifold isn't deteriorating and lumps/flakes of it are passing into the turbo as already mentioned.

If the arm is removed from the actuator there should be around 10-12mm of travel on the VNT arm, there must be no snagging or tight spots even if it feels slight it will stick at higher temps.

The electronic actuator has a motorised nylon gear inside that gets stripped when the VNT sticks and can be damaged if some one tries to move the VNT arm without disconnecting the actuator first.

Star can test the full range of movement and pass the turbo actuator but under normal working conditions the VNT can stick and the arm throw the fault.

I did have a spare complete 320 turbo here but just used it on the same/similar problem your having.

I would remove the turbo and have the VNT ring cleaned, I use a Dremmel and wire brushes to clear the carbon deposits and reassemble with high temp grease on the bolts.

It should operate like a well oiled rifle bolt action :)

I had the same problem showing as exhaust back pressure and turbo actuator faults leading to limp mode. Changing the exhaust sensor made no difference. It turned out to be the glow plug relay! I was told that for some strange reason certain components get a power feed direct from the relay circuit and failure of the relay can throw up false error messages for various components such as the turbo actuator etc. This would also put the car in limp mode - just a thought

I’ve had 2 years of this now and no mechanic can sort it out I’ve spent a fortune , this time I’ve found the actuator serial number does not match the original turbo , could this be it . I love the car and want it running as good as I know it can . I will buy a brand new turbo and matching actuator if I have to . All other parts changed twice now by different mechanics becaus original man would not answer my calls and same now from the turbo fitter .

Did you ever get that problem sorted?
