Evening all.

I currently have a 2013 S350L which I love. However, I sometimes wonder if it's a little "overboard" for what I need. Instead, I'm thinking about moving to a newer E220d. However, I do like the luxury and space in my current car so is this "downgrade" likely to be something I'll regret?

Empty garage, awaiting new toy :)
Yes.

It will be a brutal downgrade if your S Class is in 1st class condition.

^ is right!
Not only the space and luxury but engine wise after the 350 you will really regret the move to a 220, 6cyl vs 4cyl is very noticeable.
That said the 212 is a very solid accomplished car and specced right is a very nice place to be and I understand the latest E class 213 is even nicer.
What about an estate?

You might find you like the E Class but I'm sure you won't like the 4 cylinder engine after having the V6

Yes, the engine issue was something I was thinking about (even taking into account the newer technologies in the more recent model cars). I think I'll just stick with the S-Class (even with its fat arse sticking out in car park spaces, lol!)

Yes agree with all the above advice, moving from V6 to IL4 would be a big disappointment and finding an E Class with anything like the spec on your S Class nigh on impossible and would be a lengthy process

E350coupe Bluetec around 300hp, full leather including dash, command, park assist, memory seats, blah blah etc etc, on a conservative run out about 40mpg...

The really heavy depreciation has gone on your S350, it will be much higher on a new E200.
Assuming its reliable stick with it, thats what I am doing.

The blow could be cushioned with a high spec V6 model though?

Maybe I’m getting old but I caught myself lusting after one of my customers CL500 AMG sport edition W216 the other day...

That means you are still young at heart :D . I was really tempted to alter your above quote to " I caught myself lusting after one of my customers" but I then thought that's a bit childish , so I didn't do it o_O

Yes, stick with the S350. Especially if it's a car you know, and have owned for some time. The only upgrade would be to a V8 S class.

I down graded whilst we settled Mums estate. Purely because the SL was getting on, and there was a pristine C270 CDi with 17,800 miles just sitting in the driveway. ( insured and taxed ).
Dont get me wrong the C270 was in perfect condition, and a nice car.
But there is something "Special" about the S Class (I include SL and CL in this catergory) Build, drive and comfort!

I think you would sorely miss it ... I did!
Plus as one poster said .... you have already swallowed the biggest depreciation!

I did consider upgrading the CL to a newer one.
I know I should be much more practical and in the interim get a really battered cheap ML, whilst we built our house; and then get the newer CL ....
constantly visiting a site, covered in dust and mud, needing tomrush off and get bits and bobs.
I know it makes sense but ...... I dont relish doing the sensible thing.

Thats precisely why we bought 'The bus'. Best thing I've bought in ages. Cost us near nowt and has been terrific as I don't need to be all precious about it.

I bought my little van to save my ‘lowly’ E class - First world problems and all that...

As LK said its very practical.
Just a bit scared of buying a cheap ML ( that can act as a normal car and an ad hoc site vehicle).
And then getting into a train of expensive repairs :(.
The ideal vehicle in the Carribean was that Toyota pick up. Bought it second hand think it was 6 years old, but being a small Island only 30,000 on the clock.
Ist day I owned her visited the site, having just driven through rain, and a big gust of wind dusted her totally with cement! Setting nicely on the paintwork.
Power washed her down ... job done!

Sold her when the house was finished 18 months later, and lost $500 USD. Put it down to a "cost of building" . Great value for money.
The only repairs were an Oil and filter change ( well I would) and a tail light lens cracked by a careless workman ( but thats not really a repair ).

Problem is I am not sure a pickup works well in the UK, as all your stuff is constantly subject to getting wet. :(:(
A guy who does some work for me, bought one and was very pleased with it; but I noticed the following year he had a van! ... as he said he was fed up of his tools / plasterboard etc. getting a soaking or having to time runs coinciding with a dry day!
