hi all,

First post so not too sure what to say.

I own a merc clk 200k sport and last month or so ive noticed what can only be described as a Whiring noise coming from what sounds to be the top right hand side of the engine (right hand side when at front of the engine). This only occurs when I am driving and in drive. I can't pin point where it is coming from as sound doesn't occur when in neutral and rev or when I've got hand break on and accelerate. The sound speeds up faster you go and slows down the slower you go. https://clyp.it/i0nqicxt

I have attached the audio so that might help.

If this only occurs when you're moving that to me indicates that it's not the engine at all but maybe propshaft rubbing or a wheel bearing , it sounds a bit like an idler bearing or water pump but you'd hear that whilst stationary . Does the noise change with speed and you could try freewheeling down an incline in neutral with the engine idling to see if it's still there. Edit I've just reread your post so I see it does change with speed so all most certain it's the running gear .

I'd hazard a guess at wheel bearing.

Yep - a complete guess is front nearside wheel bearing. Sometimes transmitted through suspension turret, so sounds engine related.

Auto box, so no freewheeling in neutral.

And this forum's going crazy lately! Like London buses - Posted this reply once, it took forever to show, and three turned up! Had to fiddle about cancelling.

Thanks for all your replies. I'm going to stick it up on a Jack tomorow and check the wheel bearings. They probably need to be greased. Any idea how I'd go about doing it or would it be easier for a garage to do it. If so how much you reckon I'd have to splash out?

If it's a 722.6 there's no problem dropping into N while moving.
