Hi. This is my first post so apologies if this issue has been posted elsewhere! I’m a proud owner of a 2011 Mercedes C250 AMG coupe, absolutely love the car until yesterday. It’s an automatic transmission and for some reason after setting off in the car, it seemed to be choosing the wrong gear. So when the car should have been in 2nd gear, it was in 3rd. Then the car realised it should be in second so jerked down to 2nd. This was quickly followed by the Engine Management Light coming on, and then the car refusing to go past 3000rpm (I’m under the assumption this is in limp mode?)

The cars been booked in at Mercedes to be diagnosed and repaired, just wondering if anybody has experienced similar issues before?

Thank you!

Welcome!
The car is indeed in limp mode when it does this.
What mileage has your car covered, and do you know if the ATF has ever been changed?
Hopefully it’s that simple
Otherwise may be an electroplate, not as simple but also not world ending stuff

Many thanks for the reply! Cars done around 76,000 miles. Not entirely sure regarding the ATF (no idea what that actually is to be honest!) but what I do know is that the car was fully serviced by Mercedes before I purchased it 5 months ago. The electroplate doesn’t sound like a good thing! Any idea what sort of cost I’m looking at if it is the elctroplate? Thanks again!

Give The Merc dealer a ring who you bourght the car off , the car should have had a gearbox oil and filter done at 37,500 miles , if it was missed at the time the dealer should have done it befor sale to you . You may even have a Mercedes 1 year Tier one warranty to cover any additional faults

Unfortunately I didn’t buy the car off Mercedes themselves, but an independent garage. I do have the invoices from when the services were carried out so I’ll dig them out tonight to see if the gearbox oil and filter was changed. Thanks for the help!

ATF = automatic transmission fluid.

You say you've booked it into Merc Main Dealership - did you think of contacting the supplying dealer if it's still under warranty? They may have sorted it for free.

If it's not under warranty, it may well be much cheaper for you to go to a good local MB independent specialist.

This won't be the 722.6 box - it'll be the 7G transmission I think.
It'll be the turbine speed sensor most likely but needs to be put on STAR to get the codes to confirm it.
If so the electroplate will need changing - aftermarket part cost for a warrantied rebuilt one (available on eBay) are from £300 plus fitting costs.

7g box. That is, it has seven speeds, not five or nine.

You can obtain service history from Mercedes (assuming car has been serviced by MB prior to your ownership). Ask your nearest MB Dealership. At such a mileage there won't be much history - maybe a couple of recalls - but it might confirm an Atf change at around 40k miles.

Proper equipment is required for a fluid change, so a local garage may not have it. Even low fluid could give the symptoms you describe.
MB or a recognised Merc Indie is the course to follow, as you are doing. You won't get a proper diagnosis elsewhere on this.

The dealer who I purchased the car off provided a 6 month warranty with Autotrust (independent warranty). So I thought I’d recover the cost through them hopefully! I did try and Independent Merc specialist, however he said to me that it would be best to take it straight to Merc (supposedly a gearbox issue is best done through Merc due to only Mercedes being able to code the part?) Unfortunately I’m somewhat extremely limited when it comes to mechanical! I’m more worried about the car being no good anymore!

Where are you based? We have several indys here who can do that work and others that are recommended by other members who use them.

Some indies do not have a full Mercedes star diagnostic and so are un able to code in and update control units so the steer you towards a mb dealer. We have fitted 2gearbox control units today. :)

I’m from Lancashire. If you’re based anywhere near there, I’ll happily drop my car off!

I had similar problems on my S203 - C Class C220 CDi Estate (but mine is 5-speed). It turned out to be a loose/broken "boost" pipe. All done and dusted and the car drives just like before. As people said above, it pays to have a good indy - I used Mercland in Northampton.

- I hope it's as simple a fix for yours!

I didn’t suggest 722.6 box?
