So the COMAND dial has failed, well the rotary bit has but the push NESW works, this is apparently caused by the shaft breaking, doing a bit of research on this it appears there is a fix by replacing the shaft with an alloy one, loads of places sell these or I could replace the unit and wait for it to fail again!!

Great "how to" on this listing

If I go down this route I may see if I can change the dial for the black centered one

Also 2 good how-to videos on this site (scroll down the page a way):

https://www.julau.de/

They charge USD49 delivered (or 40 Eurosovs if you click on the "customers from Europe" banner which takes you to Amazon.de), but include a 4 piece set of plastic trim removal tools for free. I bought my replacement shaft from them, watched the videos and decided the fiddly bits and my shakey hands would not work, so had my local ICE place do the job - £120!

Chris

Cheers for that, I will probably attempt myself, doesn't look too complicated and I can get my hands on a set of trim tools

Wherever you buy and whether you fit yourself or cheat as I did, I reckon this is a very worthwhile update to your Comand knob, as with the original plastic shaft fitted it's only a matter of time before it shears (I have the parts to show what happens!), whereas the aluminium replacement will not shear (and will not rust!!).

Don't understand why MB sourced the original unit with plastic shaft instead of metal - no doubt another bean counter option. It's not as if the shaft breaking is an unknown problem, they'll sell you a complete replacement module for megabucks when they could cure the problem at source for pennies.

Will be the manufacturers fault, they will have a cost to work to and plastic is cheap, if it fails then who cares, most will return to MB and buy a new module unaware they could save hundreds

This is a list of all the cars that use that module

C-Class W204, C204, S204

CLA-Class C117, X117

E-Class W212, S212, A207, C207

CLS-Class S218, X218

GLK-Class X204, X218

SLK-Class R172

Think of the amount of failures!!!!!!

What I am after is the W212 cover for the knob with the black centre, If I can change that at the same time then awesome
