Hi forgive me if this is the wrong place im new.

So Saturday 13/01/2018 i took delivery of my first Mercedes switching from a bmw 1 series llve the car but have a major concern with fuel consumption.

So firstly i have a 64 plate c220 sport bluetech which is a 2.1 L engine. Nkt knowing how it was driven before myself i reset all my mpg counters and the car seems to be drinking alot of fuel.

Im struggling to get above 28mpg and this is the car in eco mode and driving like an old granny not enjoying the ride.

My job sometimes means we have quiet spells so ill sit in my car and i do nights so it gets very cold so the other night the car was running for couple hours at idle i know this aint great but i could have my bmw running most the night and hardly use any diesel. My bmw was a 2.0l m sport.

To put into prospective i put £30 diesel imto my merc amd covered 140 miles before i needed to fill up. My bmw would go all week on £20. and as i said im struggling to get above 28mpg
So im hoping thers is some merc genius out there than can help me the car is going back to were i bought it from on friday and they said they will plug it in and check for fuel leaks by doing this are they likely to find the source of the problem? My guess is dodgy MAF or O2 sensor but any help from you would be appreciated so when i go on friday i jave something to fire at them thanks in advance ive attached a pik of my car

If there were fuel leaks on a diesel you’d see/ smell it on the ground where the car is parked.

First step is to check the fuel lines but before that, shining a torch down the sides of the engine and looking at the under tray should show any leaked fuel.

Secondly, get the car plugged into Star (at a Mercedes dealer or a Mercedes independent garage). This will tell you what the car itself is reporting- any odd readings etc. Plus, Star can force the car into re- adaptation where it “learns” your driving style.

For reference I have an E220 Bluetec with the same engine as yours, not driven on any sort of economical route and getting nowhere near the 55-60mpg of other members with similar cars here, returns an average of 39mpg.

It's the ticking-over for hours that kills the fuel economy figure. You are effectively doing Zero MPG, so any driving you do after that will have to drag the average up enormously..

Maybe the tickover speed is set too high, or maybe it was set too low in the Beemer?

Sat at tickover will kill mpg for sure. The question here is that he’s going through £30 to do 140 miles.

OP, does that include time spent idling?

My experience of BMW 1.6 and 2.0 engines was that they were a little worse than the 220 MB lump.

It is also colder weather so lights, heater, heated seats etc all on will affect the MPG

Thanks for the responses so far.

Craig- yes the 140 miles includes the ticking over before the ticking over it said i can do 148 miles before filling up that jumped down to 60 miles and the check fuel light come on

Lostkiwi- yes engine appears to get upto temp.

I know having the engine ticking over is never good and it will use fuel but should not be using what it did my collegue has a top spec for kuga 2.0L and his needle hardley moves and uses next to nothing aswell as my bmw previously. Its been 48 hrs and ive nkt had the car ticking over and its still struggling to get over 28mpg

One of the big issue for fuel economy in the above picture is the "4.0'C"

So go to a local Indy and spend £60 getting the problem diagnosed properly... like I advised you in post 2.

Stop swearing! ;)

As Craig said the best way forward is to go to a competent independent and have them look at the live data. You don't say where you are so we can suggest someone.

I'm sure John can come along and suggest someone (I'm not so au fait with northern indys).

A MAF issue will be recorded in the ECU. MB diagnostics are pretty good and if you know what you're looking at they will help pinpoint the issue quickly.
Steve at Avantgarde is a guru on STAR but he's in Bristol so a little far to travel most likely

It isn’t just the diagnostics kit. It’s who does the work (eg it requires specialist experience sometimes).

My CL500. It had an engine power problem from when I bought it. What could be the cause? No one knew. MAF sensor people (on here) said. So I bought a new MAF. Nope, nothing, no change. Took it over to Malcolm (RIP) who hooked it up to Star and with LostKiwi we poked prodded and tried all sorts. Still couldn’t fix it. It was like there was plenty of power until one booted it and it was lacking then. Also fuel efficiency was on the low side, 17-18mpg when it should’ve been 22-23. There was a fault code of a failed adaptation sensor which made no sense and no one had seen them fail EVER in any case.

Finally gave in and left it with my Indy. He discovered... a family of (dead, mummified) mice inhabiting the valley between the cylinder heads, under the intake manifold. They had wazzed all over one of the adaptation sensors, killing it (ha!) along with two of the three core plugs. Phil the Indy was incredulous. Before I bought it the car had lived in a used car dealers lot for 6mth on the edge of a farm...

Now it goes like a rocket and returns 28-29mpg on a motorway run at 75+mph.

So...you never can tell! Use the Mercedes Specialist Finder on here, or ask someone like forum member John Laidlaw who lives up your neck of the woods for a recommendation.
