Hi all.
I wonder if anyone can help me, I recently bought a 230 slk 1998. She is a little tatty and has a few problems, but the latest insult is a little red light that has started flashing today. I assume this is something to do with the alarm system, the light is tiny and sits to the left of the steering wheel. I think it usually flashes when the car is locked. But today it was flashing while I was driving the car, not continuously, but every 10 seconds ish, anyone know what that's all about. Also I have a black plastic credit card size thing, it says funk card remote control card but I have no idea what it does, should I be doing something with this?
Any help would be appreciated

Well Mr & Mrs Happy, congratulations on purchasing a model R170. I have one in showroom condition and I think they'e fantastic little sports cars and a whole lot of fun for very little money !
Regarding your problem, the Mercedes alarms around this time are well known for playing up after a few years. It' the siren part and most people disconnect them or replace with a new one (about £100 these days I guess). Usually they go off at odd times or cause the indicators to flash after locking up. I'm guessing this may be the problem in your case. I take it there are no other symptoms ? I believe the alarm is usually situated behind the nearside front wheel arch liner on most models.
Sorry but I have no idea what the "funk card" is and I don't have one of those.
Good luck.

Welcome Jan
The alarm bit answered above - the card thing is a forerunner to today’s keyless go system, whereby if you have this card in your pocket you can open the car and drive off etc, also disable alarm on unlocking when it’s present.
Just thinking on a bit, maybe the card needs a new battery - could be why you have the red light flashing?
I don’t know the system too well, maybe someone with one will pipe up....

Need to fit a new alarm imobiliser to mine .It failed a few years ago .
So i removed it .It took ages to fish out from the dashboard and take the wires off items inside .

Was there a 'keyless go' type gadget on a 1998 SLK?
Sounds a bit forward to me.
I had that model, and the entry/start system was with normal remote key.

As an aside madam - if your's is a bit tatty, please check the cross bracing bars underneath the car. Mine were so rusted out that I could feel the car flex as I drove uneven roads.

hi all mr happy here. Thanks for the help guys. I have done a bit of work on the slk so far I have changed all the discs and pads full service plugs, air filter, oil ect. got some rumberling going on as we drive but not mechanical sound so changing all the tyres on Thursday as ones on are getting hard and cracking and a make I have never heard of chineses I think. got a bit of play in the near side ball joint at the front which is why she pulld slightly to the left will sort that when weather improves. had her resprayed so she look good in her near coat. sorted out some leaks but found another small one yesterday in the rain.. out with the black mastic again! but still an odd one with this flashing red light which is the light that flashes when car is locked up to signify that the alarm is set but as the missus said noticed it flashing for a few minutes after starting up the car. could it be to say that the back up battery is going in the alarm???

As Unclecumbuz mentioned the keyless go card is probably a bit young for this car - apologies didn’t pick up on the 1998 bit! Might be in your car by accident ....

Mr H is out playing with his bikes, so thought I would put a couple of pics of the funk card thingy, we put batteries in it today and by pressing the button on it, it does unlock the car, and then the key comes out to put in the ignition. Now I love a gadget but the point of this thing escapes me, why wouldn't I just use the key! But mystery solved, it can be used instead of the key. Re the red flashy light, Mr H pulled off some wires on the alarm thingy under the bonnet, then put them back on which has stopped the flashing. But while I have your attention guys, I have a little square black box in the glovebox, which looks like a cd changer box, but its only the size of a large credit card, any ideas what that is?
