As the title says

Are the reconditioned high pressure fuel pumps better value for money when changing pumps?

Most of the companies that do make them are approved by Bosch and Delphi etc which is what original Mercedes makes come from.

Also most of them comes with 1/2 year warranty. Has anybody had any issues with a recon pump within the warranty time.

What are the life expectancy of a reconditioned pump compared to the new ones.

Mercedes used to do reconditioned fuel pumps that come with the 12 month warranty - not sure if they still do

Not any more. They only sell the new ones and they aren't cheap. Hence people tend to go for the recon ones most of time.

I had my 210 HP pump reconditioned by the local Bosch diesel specialist and no problems since. The main problem with these pumps are leaks so a new set of seals are all that’s required the pump itself I would imagine would be good for 200k miles

I was charged £400 for removal refurb and refitting a couple of years ago

Do you mean seals that connects to the fuel pumps that needs changing every now and then?
I was quoted £1200 by Mercedes for a new pump but a Bosch recon one priced as roughly what you have mentioned.

The main issue with the pumps are leaking internal o ring seals due to them perishing or a build up of rust pushing mating faces apart mechanically they don’t usually fail unless the car has been misfuelled

I read somewhere online that, diesel leaking Into engine bay can cause catastrophic engine failure or other big issues. Mines been leaking for a couple of weeks now. Thought about engine bay steam wash but is that good or bad idea on a Mercedes!!

That diesel Smell is quite strong when you get close to the car. Is there any other ways of doing it.

If the leak is bad it’s better to stop using the car until the issue is dealt with diesel will perish rubber hoses and aux drive belt etc

Once the pump is fixed, the smell will become less noticeable and given a little time it will go altogether.

But do you think if I don't wash off all the diesel that has fallen is it not going to cause corrosion or rust over time? As we all know diesel has corrosive substance on it.

Personally I would rather clean hoses etc with a cloth and take the worst off than starting to steam clean everything. Depending on how bad your leak is, if it is on the poly belt, I would change it -for the sake of a few quid.

It's not dripping so much onto the poly belt but more so towards the bottom of the fuel pump and underneath. Its quite wet at the bottom. Taking the car to Wayne Gates tomorrow to get it checked out to see how bad it's leaking.

Pressure washing the engine/bay is a bad idea don't do it, as above just clean with rags, that will do fine, diesel smell fades pretty quick once the leak is fixed. personally I don't buy into this idea that diesel melts rubber belts etc, what are a lot of the fuel pipes made out of .
