Hi guys and apologies if this has been asked several times before but my search didn’t really return anything, on cold start I get a rattle under the bonnet for about 3 seconds then it’s gone ... only happens from cold never from warm ... any ideas ??

No not every time, only when it’s really cold ... it doesn’t sound as bad as the one in the clip you attached but it does sound similar

Do you give it a couple of goes on the glowplugs or just once?

As did mine to be fair ... I’ve really only noticed it when it’s say below 5 degrees ... strange

Lots of them do it for 1-2 seconds, its relatively normal.

Thicker oil helps but I would stay inside MB spec.

If it rattles for as long as that video, then there is a problem.

Good to know, thanks Alexanderfoti

It did it this morning at 6 degrees even after a double dose of glow plugs but as stated previously it’s two or three seconds then it’s gone

It's because the tensioner is oil pressure driven. Thinner oil drains down quicker overnight.

What difference would longer go on the glowplugs have?
