Hi, i have joined here and hope to get help with my problem.

My parents brought a c class 200k brand new back in 2007, always been serviced and maintained very well. Now at 86,000 miles and chain has stretched and has jumped about 3 teeth and won't start.

I need to carry out a leak down test to confirm if any valves are bent.

They said I can have the car and i intend on repairing it myself.
I was just wondering if any has used parts from m271.com or is it best to get mercedes parts.

Hopefully I can get this car back and running without breaking the bank as its far to nice to go to the scrap yard.

Thanks.

I know of a few indies that use M271 parts without issue.

Take the heads off, replace the chain, bent valves and gears + tensioner and it should be fine.

Don't forget to change the sprockets too. As the chain stretches it will also wear all the sprockets.

Thanks, the sprockets seem to be in good condition and don't jump around. Maybe salvageable, im praying for no bent valves but im doubt full.

Agreed. They look shot.

Oh.. and they are marked E and A. E is inlet and A is exhaust (from the first letter of the German for inlet and exhaust).

If you have bent valves, then the guides often get damaged too

Thanks, ill carry out a leak down test tonight. Then if valves are bent, ill have to find time to remove the head and inspect for damage. Then I'll order the sprockets, chain, tensioner, head gasket, head bolts and valves etc from m271.com. Massive saving over mercedes original parts, just hope they will be of good quality.

Ill make a thread and update with progress.

Just done the leak down test and only cylinder one held any sort of pressure and the was the only one to have good compression. Safe to say some valves have been bent. :( Hope to get the head off Sunday if all goes well.

Just had a thought, im going to take the camshafts out and re do the leak down test just to be 100% as I am unable to guarantee that all the valves were closed due to it being out of time.

You won't get compression if the valves don't open (they have to open to give the piston something to compress)

So doing a leak down test with the camshaft out, so all the valves are closed will 100% tell me if any are bent and not closing fully.
Does that sound like its worth doing?

If it where me, I would just take the head off. Its only the additional cost of the head gasket and a bit of coolant.

Yeah, i might just do a quick leak down test as I need to take the camshafts out anyway if im removing the head, will only take a minute as all the valves will be closed. No harm in making sure I suppose.

When taking off the head should I have it set to OT on the crank or doesnt it really matter.
I intend on winding in the chain with the camshafts out (head off if needed), then riviting the chain.
Just trying to get my head around the timing procedure. Do i have the crank set to tdc before installing the head then install the camshafts with the timing marks aligned. Sorry if I sound stupid I just want to be 100% sure it goes smoothly. Thanks.

Well took the camshafts out after work today and carried out a quick leak down test. Still nothing of cylinder 2 3 and 4.

Bent valves 100% now. Next step, remove head and hope pistons are ok.

I did notice a few scratches on the camshaft housing, is this ok or do I need a new head?
