Yup, the OM642 engine has been around for years and they just continually refine it and add what is necessary to keep the emissions down

The 4 pot one is a 2.1L that has also been refined over the years

I think there is a new straight 6 3L Diesel out now that debuted in the new CLS

The current 4 pot is a brand new 2.0L, and I've just been reading about the new straight six diesel you mentioned, it will come in 286bhp and 340bhp/516ft/lb guises, sounds mighty!

It might not bother you but the Bluetec doesn’t have a spare wheel, the ADBLUE tank now occupies that space and as you mentioned long distance travel you may want to either carry a spare with you or fit runflats. The prefacelift 212 does have a spare but is EU5
Thank you for this note...actually is does bother me but I guess there's not much I can do about except as you say.

The current 4 pot is a brand new 2.0L

It is the OM651 engine 2.1 CDi, they rebadged then with just a D when they went to EU6 spec, not much new about it at all in the W212.

The 220CDi became the 220D

I've just been reading about the new straight six diesel you mentioned, it will come in 286bhp and 340bhp/516ft/lb guises, sounds mighty!

Map yours and you won't be far off it, mine is now running 300bhp and standard had 540Nm of torque after a bit of mapping by GAD

Lazily copied from wikipedia: The 2.1 has been replaced in new merc cars.

The Mercedes-Benz OM654 is a family of inline-four cylinder Diesel automobile engines introduced by Mercedes-Benz in 2016. The engine is a 2.0-liter (1950cc) turbo-diesel cast aluminum block in line four-cylinder with balancing shafts.[2] It has a single turbo and cylinder walls are lined with slippery Nanoslide, an iron-carbon coating that cuts friction. In the 220-configuration it produces 143kW/195 hp@3800rpm with peak torque of 400 nm@1600-2400rpm. The engine weight is 168.4 kg (a 17% improvement over the 202.8 kg of the previous 2,143 cc OM651).[3][4] It is planned that it will feature across the entire Mercedes-Benz range of cars and vans.[5]

Mapping mine is on my list of things to do, but I imagine that at some point someone will map this new 340bhp engine...400bhp?

That is in the W213 i.e. the brand new E class. W212 cars have the OM651, still a clattery 4 pot!!!

Get it done, makes it a very rapid motor, in gear acceleration is epic.

That new engine will be up near 400bhp with a good map, the torque will be massive!!!!
