I took the wheels off the E55 today to repaint the hubs with Hammerite and on taking off the o/s/r wheel I found this on the inside rim. 20180503_112909.jpg 20180503_115803.jpg

More than likely caused by a pothole, not one but two splits in the wall. Its lucky its been spotted now as I dread to think of that failing at high speed.
Got a new one ordered from Tyreleader at £104.75

Lucky find buddy . Despite the cost of the new tyre . Doesn't bear thinking about if that went wrong at speed .

Wow that is bad. Either big pothole/sharp pothole or those annoying speed "cushions"

That's dreadful. Apart from a cursory glance, most of wouldn't dream of looking inside like that - we check the tread and the outside wall for scuffs and hope it's okay for the pocket...

Sorry/but glad you found it!

Exactly Dave. Unless its being serviced or MOT'd, how many of us take the wheels off to properly inspect the inside tyrewalls?

I'll be checking far more often.

Wow..... do those splits go all the way through to the cords?

Only time I’ve seen pressurised rubber products behave like that normally is extreme over pressure fracture or low temperature fracture, never been unfortunate enough (yet) to experience a stress fracture like that!

^ No Alistair, just a mm deep through the outer layer of rubber thankfully.

I dread to think I did silly speeds coming back from Heathrow a couple of weeks ago if it was already like that.

seen quite a few tyres do this over the years , poor build quality imo

Hmm something caused it and I don't think its down to build quality. I 've had 7 others in the past without a problem.

I had a smaller version pointed out to me on Monday during my Fortwo's MOT. Down to out atrocious potholes roads .... IMHO

Two new tyres required but fortunately they're only little

I'd be very interested to see what the tyre fitter says about that. I'm not convinced two splits in the same tyre would be pothole damage.

I've used Falken ZE912's & 914's for the last 10 years, their build quality is not in question.

The more I look at the pictures the less convinced I am by this being an impact break resultant from potholes. Any examples I’ve seen are bulged as well as cracked and as AMGeed mentions it’s not through the reinforcements. Bit baffling.....
