If the old ones are goosed, just drill an 1/8" hole in them, insert a self tapper and pull off with pliers...
I usually just punch a screw driver through then and lever them off

Yip, if goosed that’s what I’ve done- I even did that with the 63 normal silver ones as I was in a hurry - now my mean Scotsness is regretting it

Can I do anything with this stuff on the wheels until they are done? Could I use wire wool and then use a metal polish?

nothing to do until you have them refurbished, leave them alone

Could be worse, you could have these stupid things which try to strip the threads as soon as you look at them
Yip, that’s not a design improvement Dave

Mercedes have finally figured out, how to make a ridiculously expensive caps incompatible, with any other Mercedes or AMG alloys, but the one they're sold with ...

Then they get new owners who dont look in the manual, think they're separate centre hub pieces and try to prise off the centre piece LMAO
(and yes, it was me, on my S63 coupe. Fortunately I used insulating tape on the screwdriver!)

For the price I'm happy to give them a go, the original ones I have look nasty.

That's awful. How old are they?

And what's happened to MB quality. My 1991 caps lasted, with much less deterioration than that, for 26 years!!

Mind you, I've heard of reports of exhausts that fail in 3 years despite the fact that their price is staggering.

Hey ho.

Well, the car is 2013 so I will assume that they are up to 5 years old.

Shouldn't count on it, a lot of those cheepo ebay jobs need changing every six months if you want them to stay looking good.

I cannot imagine that the previous owner would have used cheap parts, the service in April cost him £750. I have receipts of all work carried out by MB, and the previous owner to that was the first and the car was under warranty.

But you never know!

Yep, a few smaller jobs, but also the ATF change . Every time anything was done to the car it was done by a MB Dealer.

This is the state if the centres, also taken a pic of the back of the caps. Do they look original?

Yup, genuine original OE caps, as John already said.

One little details almost always tells you, if it's original OE - manufacturing month / year - Chinese copy masters never bother to change the mould :) so mostly just remove the dots / arrows or digits, and keep churning
