Guys

I am highly considering getting my 2011 CL500 4.7L twin turbo remapped here https://www.cg-remaps.co.uk/
Other than "More BHP" in Crewe, there doesn't seem to be many tuning companies in and around south Cheshire / north Shropshire and that's why I'm looking into getting it done here.

They assure me that measurements are taken before and after the software squirt via dynamometer rolling road so it seems they are going about it the right way.

Their reviews seem to be very good, and their price of just £400 seems to be very reasonable indeed, with other companies asking in excess of £1000 for what seems to be the same job!

Interestingly, wherever I go on the net to find potential results etc, every single company offering a remap for this model ALL give exactly the same figures. I’m guessing then that the software required to squirt into the engine ECU comes from the same supplier?

Are there any obvious questions you guys would be asking before parting with your money for this upgrade? I doubt that there are many members on here that have had such an upgrade on this engine as the CL is quite a rare sight on the roads.

Thanks in advance, Will.

Yip, as above it’s not much further to MSL and you can guarantee a good job from folks who know Mercedes inside out. I had my Stage 1 there in April.
Not saying anything against these folks specifically they are just unknown- sounds cheap at £400 but give Acid at MSL a ring to see what he can do for you.

Where will you use the extra power ???

I have never understood this, other than for track purposes.

I understand the desire of big bhp numbers for many drivers.

I reiterate under what circumstance would 0-62 5.7s not be enough on UK roads.

When I see 2s,3s,4s acceleration times, the cost of upgrading the vehicle for such a minimum
percentage of these rare moments, over the life of the car seems very poor value for money.

Each to his own I guess, but I never seem to see anyone doing this level of acceleration, apart from the odd accident highlighted on you tube with heavy car damage.

There’s more than roads.....and it’s not about the 0-62 in many cases

I agree, it’s not all about power… it’s also about the delivery of the power and torque.

I know that different mapping can transform the drive quality of the vehicle, it’s part of what I do here at the main Bentley factory in aftersales.

Yes the power and torque will be increased but so will the quality of the drive along with a small increase decrease in fuel consumption.

I don’t go around driving like a madman, part of my job is proof driving our Bentleys so I easily get used to power and torque.

It’s all down to personal preference, and it’s my preference that it gives a little more (510bhp and 840Nm). ☺

You could come to the dyno day at MSL at Sunday, you'll get a good idea of what can be done

Far more important than 0-60 is the 30-70 time. That's the one that measures your ability to quickly pass the tractor that's been holding you up for the past 10 miles.

Apparently the overtaking figure for the OP's car CL500 is as follows:

Overtaking factors:

The times show how fast a car accelerates using the optimal gear or gears, in typical overtaking situations. It is an overtaking with gear reduction or kick-down, the best possible times. Not including the transmission reaction time.

60-100 km/h through gears (sec):

2.6

80-120 km/h through gears (sec):

3.3

100-180 km/h through gears (sec):

10.2

40-70 mph through gears (sec):

3.6

50-90 mph through gears (sec):

5.9

How much quicker do you need to be??

It can never be too quick. Overtaking is a potentially hazardous activity so to minimise the time exposed to danger makes perfect sense. The faster you can get past the obstruction and back on your side of the road the safer it is for all concerned.

Have just realised the OP's car is the 4.7 Turbo version.

Therefore overtaking figures will be even lower !!!!

60 - 100 km/h is 2.4 sec

ive had in excess of 20 cars mapped , both diesel and petrol , there so much more to a remap than power , they are smoother , sharper on the throttle , easier to use , more relaxed for overtaking , more flexible , better on fuel . . . . .

The OP's car is a modern Mercedes "S" class coupe costing circa £100k.

The expert car reviews, of which there are many, extol all of the above. Indeed they are the main USP of the car for marketing purposes.

Smooth, sharp, ease of driving, relaxing are often quoted, together with average fuel economy being 29 mpg.

The difference after mappng must be marginal, apart from the knowledge of increased BHP and Torque, which I do understand must make a difference, mainly to speed and acceleration which doesn't seem necessary on this car!

I feel it is a bit "Emperor's new clothes"
