Ahhh ... Kwikfit.
What a wonderful organization ... for Kwikfitters.

Thank goodness I, like a few others on here, have a 'tame' Mot guy near me who knows me and my cars well.
He trusts me to fix any little marginal thing that Mr. Kwikfit would obviously fail me on - or he even does it for me and tells me after he has given me a pass certificate.

Fire & frying pan springs to mind ....
Hmmm, if any of those jokers found a fault in my cars good luck!
Anyway my local Kwik Fit are ok, they’ve done MOTs on other cars I’ve had for many years and haven’t (so far) pulled any tricks. Dear Malcolm used Kwik Fit too...

I do use Halfords for MOT's as I normally get a £30 deal, I've used Mercedes as well when they do the same. I made an error taking my Land Rover to Halfords as they don't really understand them and mine in particular - mine is mechanically very good just a little rough cosmetically. I'll just use my Landy Specialist in future, I only used Halfords as I had a deal.

In what respect?
A dangerous vehicle is dangerous with or without an MOT

If the vehicle has defects not considered dangerous, it is still legal to continue driving the car until the current MOT expires.

Edit.....Should have directed this reply to Flyingspanner.

https://www.autonetinsurance.co.uk/...2012/03/09/failed-mot-can-i-drive-my-vehicle-

I agree that a dangerous vehicle should not be allowed to leave the garage unless trailered away if the repairs are being done elsewhere.

If you have an O2 phone and use the Priority app, this weekend there is a free screen wash valued at £3. Have had it before, it works well in the winter. :) You get a receipt that can be used to get a free MoT.

Should anyone want a receipt for the Basingstoke branch, I have one you can have.

My wife and I got a free screen wash each this evening. In the morning my mother and daughter will be sent into get another 2 bottles, as they have O2 Priority on their phones. On our way out for the day :alien:

I must be related to the roughneck to find such deals that warm the cockles of his heart!! :):)

Tuesday/Weds is free hot drink at Cafe Nero that you get a stamp on the card for another free one in ten. These offers pay for daughters phone each month and well into mine. Lots of folk get embarrassed using them, but I dine out on them :rolleyes:

Buy as little as a £1 99 air freshner and get a free MOT that must be taken before October 31st 2019.

https://www.halfords.com/advice/motoring/service/free-mot-at-halfords

If you aren't fussy where you have your MOT carried out, this might save £50+

this ought to remind everyone of the phase " there's no such thing as a free lunch "

where you local garage who knows you and the car - and will allow the full use of the MOT regulations to let yours pass - the free or heavily discounted franchised merchants will do the exact opposite and fail when there's 20k miles of life in said part - so your free MOT will cost 3 days of repairs and 500 quid

I don't disagree. Just putting the offer up so people can make their own minds up whether or not to take it up.
Personally I won't bother and will continue to use my local MOT garage who I have a good relationship with.

I bought some G3 professional scratch remover as recommended by AMGeed on another thread. I bought it at Halfords in order to qualify for a free MOT as recommended by AMGeed. I'm happy on both counts. Thank you AMGeed.

I think this is where the magic word "trust" comes in...

My local indy garage uses an independent MOT station and between the two of them, they've taken care of the cars we've had for about 12 years. Because they do the services, it's highly unlikely (and it's never happened so far) that something worthy of a "nasty" fail is found during the MOT test. So they carry out the check and if it (say) needs a bulb or a headlight realigning, it comes back as a fail and my garage fixes it then it goes back and gets a pass. That's the way it's been - as I say for at least ten years. And it's very much a personal type of service - there's a manager and his "does everything" assistant and seven or eight fitters. Most of them know my name and will happily do anything to help.
- I really hope they're not a dying breed!

I run the Peugeot 206 that my father gave me a couple of years before he died. It was 13 yrs old and had done 23,000 miles. He bought it new from the local Peugeot dealer and always had it serviced there, every year, sometimes with 900 miles between services. Perhaps out of sentimentality I continued to have the car serviced by the dealer he bought it from. It's now 16 yrs old and has done 53,000 miles. It helps keep the mileage off my SL500.

Last year after MOT and service, as they presented me with the bill they told me that the head gasket had blown and it would cost £1200 to repair. This is the approximate resale value of the car in good running order. They were effectively writing it off.

After a bit of ringing around, local garages were estimating around £400 for the repair. One offered to tow it away, do the repair and deliver it back to me for £400. His garage was 25 miles away, but he got the work. After running the car successfully for a week or two, I went back to the Peugeot dealer and complained that after years of loyalty they had let us down badly. By way of apology the service manager offered a free service and MOT the following year, which I accepted.

The car they'd written off is still giving good service 15 months later but the dealer will never see that car again. The local trader who gave good value and good service will get the work from now on. He doesn't offer MOTs, so my free one from Halfords is very welcome. If it fails the local trader will tow it away from Halfords and do the work. So I'm happy to benefit from the Halfords offer, it really is something for nothing, a free lunch.

I have had MOT's at Halfords before, no issues at all, they even replaced a couple of bulbs as the ones in the rear lights had the colour coming off

I just went to a small local garage to book in the MOT at a costs of £52, I've not MOT'd a car for over 16 years so said "yes book it in please. What is the issue with Halfords doing the MOT, my car has nothing with it.

Some people think that when someone offers a very cheap mot , they make up the cost by charging for things that "may" have passed at another garage that wasn't offering deals that are below market price

Not having a car that has ever failed, don't they call you before fixing things, the only thing that I think my car might have a problem with is the foot brake, i have to use full travel for it not to run down the drive.

They will agree if it fails that they either do the work , or you maybe do it and return it (not sure if this final check would be free ?) . But some work is down to the judgement of the mot examiner . I think it all comes down to using a garage you trust regularly ?

The garage that the wife uses is the one that charges you £52. I don't have a garage as I've been a company car driver too long.
