Unfortunately the words used regarding lanes are all "should".
In the highway code anything that is law uses the word "must", anything advisory uses "should".

as you say the word 'should' apply cattle prod to their temple

The German lane ;)

Naaah... It's the BMW lane!
- Quite frequently it seems to be the Volvo Estate lane too.

On a recent trip I realised only me and the unmarked Police car were returning to the inside lane.

The people who sat glued to the middle lane continued on their merry way and the low slung golf hurtled past us all with a trailing haze of blue smoke.
The Police must have had bigger fish to fry.

Well we all know that Volvo estates don’t have indicators so it must be difficult for them to change lanes!

Long before the 70 mph limit was introduced on the motorways (by Barbara-OMG-I-absolutely-hated-her-infuriating-Castle) it was terrific to drive north (from Harrow, back then) but especially - at night. The traffic was always light to moderate and if lorries got bunched up they would flash you to "come in" to a gap (if you knew their code). We used to drive up (just after 9 pm) from Harrow to Southport in 2.25 hours or less. People behind kept their distance and there was no such thing as "road rage". Happy days indeed. :)

Those were indeed the days. Used to do north Leeds to Harrow in 2.5 hours easily - and in a Mini.

I remember that. Sheffield to Brent Cross in a 1.3 Astra in two hours.... On a Monday morning!

An old B-Class.
Tell him its not a fast lane, its an overtaking lane so if he is not overtaking anything he must move over to an inside lane.

"Fast Lane"

Old South Africanism -- practical use of the right lane (unless it has changed in the last 20 years since I lived there). You drive in the outer lane if you are going faster than the lanes to the left but "are supposed to" move over for faster moving traffic and will usually (like Germany) get flashed to move over if you are too slow.

Although considering the number of road deaths there - not sure if it is a good system.

Is the advice wrong?

No not really, just not the latest so therefore a dubious source of reliable information with regards to accuracy elsewhere in the code.

Thanks, but I didn't need another reference - the HC app is installed on my mobile phone. I'm not a nerd I just find it useful when IAM "know-it-all" associates feel the need to debate something I've said to correct something they've done :)

I would only debate your need to have posted in post number 49 when the advice was not only correct...but current.

No, the wording of the rule you linked to is different to the current wording ... but I was just being a bit pedantic to see if anyone could see the difference.

Don't take it to heart, I was just feeling in one of those moods :)
