Hi
Probably a silly question.....inside my fuel flap it says....2.5bar all round....up to two occupants....cold

its a 2016 automatic model c220d premium plus estate.....I just thought that once the car is driving and warmed up the tyre pressures will rise with expansion.....It appears high...any thoughts!

36 psi is fine, yes it will increase although not much in the current climate...

If you want to get anal, I use an app called 'TP Setter'. Input Specified PSI, Temps etc and it will give you a recommended PSI.

After using a system where I could see temps and pressures (6#) on my 4WD and off-road caravan wheels, I realised how much temp affects pressures. Even the pressure of wheel near the exhaust was affected by its heat. Tyre pressures are a big deal going on dirt roads and off road, you are constantly deflating or inflating tyres to suit road conditions.

Winter tyres are usually recommended slightly higher, but for summers that’s fine
John. I had 17” 225x55 winter wheels and tyres fitted to my E Class. As they are smaller and narrower than the original fit the tyre pressures in the petrol flap don’t cover them. Every site I’ve been to only give the pressures for the 18 x 275 x 40. The tyre guy who fitted them has used 275kPa which is almost 40 psi - the dealer isn’t too interested as I bought the wheels & tyres direct from Germany. Any idea where I can get the correct pressure from ?
I should explain I went with the smaller wheels so I could get Continentals - there were only 2 options for the standard size and according to Bild they stopped 4m later than the Conti’s

Try Kwik Fit if you haven’t already
https://www.kwik-fit.com/tyres/information/tyre-pressure-search
17s with that profile and winter should be c38 psi so you’re not far off now....
Sure Michelin used to do a calculator too must admit haven’t checked yet.....

I went down the same road & bought some 245/45/17 winter wheels & tyres. I have kept the pressure at 35psi all around, which is what ``Kwik Fit recommend.

My winter tyres have worn much more (over 23k miles) down the middle third of the tyres as opposed to the outer edges. I have maintained my tyres (I also rotate) at the correct pressures as offered by the manufacturer (filler cap info.).
Winter tyres are, of course, used in the colder weather so in future I will be setting the pressures in my winter tyres a couple of psi lower than for the summer tyres which have worn evenly set at the "filler cap" pressures.
I think this is entirely logical and should have beed expected had I put brain into gear.

............ it is colder so pressures in the tyre will be lower - therefore you need to increase the pressure. Looks like you may have over inflated your tyres. Try the free calculator I mentioned earlier (it is a free IOS app) to get the correct pressures. NOTE temps are in Fahrenheit!

VW Scirocco. The Quattro, E350 CDi Blue Efficiency Sport Coupe, now both gone
I run mine at 34 psi front and 36 psi rear in the summer and at the moment I'm experimenting with my winter set to see what works best.

38psi as indicated inside the fuel flap.No problems so far. Important to make sure that ALL the tyres have the same pressure though. A differance of a few psi between tyres, can cause very serious damage / accidents, especially in hot climates.

Do I go by what you say or what the fuel flap says? Mines a W204
The fuel flap seems to have some very dangerous advice if you're right.

John, personally I go by what is on the fuel flap on my 2010 w212 E200, which is presumably mercedes benz approved. The flap on your w204 gives slightly different info. I select the recommended PSI for the tyre size on the car, and based on the Nr of occupants, which is tyre size 225/55/16, and range 38-48 PSI. I don't have any experience with the MB 204 ( Yet .... LOL :)

My comment was tongue in cheek bud.
Front and rear tyres are not always supposed to be the same.
I always take the user manuals pressure as a starting point and then adjust to my own taste for feel and wear characteristics.

:D:D:D No problem, John . I understand very well about front / rear having different pressures, ( and even different tyre / wheel sizes ) and that would be indicated on the fuel flap, I imagine. What I meant about having the correct pressures would be on the same axle, or even diagonals where the same pressure would apply to all wheels. Many moons ago, the tyre pressure for all makes would be in the range 22 PSI Front, and 24 PSI rear....o_O o_O But we have come along way since then....even so, 38 PSI seems waaaaay to high.:( In the w212, the range is 38-48 PSI. depending on Nr of pasengers. Would have been unthinkable on a passenger car a few years ago. But I agree with your idea of experimenting to get the best pressure for your car and driving habits. :)

Is the fuel cap psi's just for standard stock? What if you upgrade to lower profile tyres?

I find the recommendations from tyre companies, various websites vary so much from what my petrol cap says.

When I had my 2 front michellin tyres fitted 295/40/20 the fitter inflated them to 42 psi. ( fat fingers on the air pressure hose, or what they think, I'll never know).

I've settled for higher to save the tyre outer edges at 37psi all round. That's for summer and winter

Sorry, I can't help you there....inside the flap only gives the tyre sizes, and the correct pressure for that particular tyre. At a guess, I would say that the tyre manufacture / fitters would have that kind of info available.....But well worth checking it out, and getting it 100% right. The importance of having the correct tyre pressure cannot be underestimated.

The sizes and pressures in the fuel flap is the starting point (and ending point for me). If you've fitted wheel and tyre sizes that aren't listed then you could have issues fouling wheel arches or suspension - not sure how that would sit with your insurance company either. I always go for the smallest wheel and tyre combo listed in the fuel filler for my winter wheels.

My Land Rover has non standard wheels and tyres - no longer 750 x 16 crossplies it sits on 235 x 16 radials (which were standard on later modes), my insurance company are aware as they wanted pictures of the vehicle. They classed it as a safety improvement so no increased costs.
