2009 facelift w219 350 diesel CLS, standard 18 inch factory fitted wheels.I have 245/40/R18 back and front, but have been told the rears should have a wider tyre, googling and searching the forum leads me to even more confusion, can anone advise of the correct size for the rears?

Your car may well have been supplied with equal width rims front and rear which would explain same size tyres.

The car will have 8.5" wide rims front and rear but if you had a staggered set up, the rears would be 9.5" wide which is the normal set up on the CLS.
You can check this by removing a rear wheel and the wheel width will be embossed on the inside of the wheel.

What you have is fine and makes swapping tyres around for equal wear very easy:)

Forgot to ask, are the wheels you have OEM Mercedes alloys or aftermarket?
Aftermarket would explain a lot.

The staggered set up would see 245x40x18 front and 275x35x18 rear tyres.

check a rear wheel it should have clearly stamped on the inside edge - rear axle only - or words to that effect. if it has the previous keeper has skimped on buying the correct fat tires.

W212/-09/350CDI, W219/-07/320CDI, EX:W220/-01/320CDI, EX:W211/-04/320CDI, EX:W210/-01/270CDI
"AMG" tyres are 255/35R19 front and 285/30R19 rear (I have those fitted for summer tyres). Other combinations are 245/40R18 all around (like you have surrently), or 275/35R18 rear. True that some rims have 'rear only' stamp.

Check the data card (Build Sheet))
Either online plenty available and free.
Or check in the service handbook wallet.

This won't help if the wheels have been changed though. He needs to work with what he's got.

If you don't see any stampings , you'll have to remove a rear wheel and check the spokes for embossed letters and numbers , for the J number , either 8J 8.5J 9J 9.5J etc etc .

Probably the correct sizes

The W219 CLS can use an 8.5x18" wheel all round BUT with different offsets Front is ET28, rear is ET18

Giving that those wheels are still on the car and not been changed then that's correct 8.5J front and back.
