Following advise here, I having invested in a CTEK charger for use on 2003 SL500.
My question now, is can I charge the consumer battery via the cigarette lighter or only via the terminals on the battery in the boot?
I presume it is an AGM battery?

i just connected up the plug end cables to the batt and leave the lead poking out into the boot,i find that once conected its still no issue to close the boot. agm it tis. i also keep a ctek on the front batt ,tho i rotate that on SL,CLK dont know about fag lighter as input, someone surely will, seems best to me to involve going thru as little as possible to charge consumer batt .rules out ANY dramas

Only via the battery terminals.
Easiest way is to put a fixed fly lead on the battery and use that to connect the battery. The CTEK usually comes with a flylead with eyelets that will do the job. Yes it's an AGM battery.

While my car is resting I use a Ctec battery conditioner on the consumer battery, but not on the starter battery. Am I just lucky that the car starts immediately every time?

Never had to charge the starter battery on ours. The consumer battery goes flat for fun though....

my start batt went dead a few yr ago, it was 10. since no issue i just prefer to rotate the ctek now and then. mine spends 4 /5 months in its cot.

I have a fly lead attached to both starter and consumer batteries in my 350. Most of the time the C-Tek is on the consumer but every now and again I give the starter battery a quick shot. It certainly won't do it any harm even if it doesn't need it.

Thanks. The consumer battery has eyelets attached from the previous owner so will use those.Thought I ought to do something because I will be in New Zealand over next couple of months

Also thanks to others for their comments.

Typical tourist; fly into Auckland, hire a car, then Paihai, Stratford, (Forgotten Highway), Cambridge, Rotorua, Wellington, then bus for South Island, Christchurch, Trans Alpine, Fran Josef, Queenstown, Christchurch, Auckland
Guess much of that is familiar to you!

Yep, been to all those places ;)
We just leave our car batteries connected when we go overseas, longest time left was 3 months and haven't had any flat battery issues. Hope I haven't said anything, I don't want any bad omens
