I had two new tyres fitted to my Vaneo on Saturday and I asked for the best one to be kept as the spare as the spare was the incorrect size. I didn't know it, but the spare wheel was actually damaged. Se 15500669628242484268079154459803.jpg e pic. I can't believe Costco have actually fitted a tyre to this wheel. They said it tested up OK and retained pressure but surely it would have been better to notify me of the damage and kept that wheel as a spare while I sourced a replacement?

That looks like a wheel balance weight in there ??

Yes it is, right over the damaged section of the wheel. Sorry not the best picture as I am on my phone and it wouldn't let me attach the picture I wanted to. I can later on but believe, the wheel is quite badly distorted in that section

That's a steel wheel with a plastic hubcap on the top. Can't really see the damage but they can take quite a bend before they fail, unlike alloys.

What Blobcat says ..... I think the balance weight is in the way of the clip on the trim.

These. It's certainly a pretty rough fitment though. I'd be looking to use someone else in future.

Is there an app you can download in play store so that you can post pictures already on your phone to the forum? It will only let me add pictures that I take with my camera now. Failing that, I will add one tonight. It doesn't look as bad when the tyre is at the bottom but when the tyre is at the top it looks like the tyre is about to separate

I should have loaded that one up first. Sorry. Its just I'm a bit miffed that they were lecturing me about having the best tyres on the back and not the front and then let me leave with a wheel like that

steel wheels in that condition - if the tyre was removed - can be persuaded back to position with a bit of light hammer work. Steel ones with such a baby dent will take that in their stride and will be as good as new and no one need know...

agree they should have either not fitted the tyre or quietly sorted it out.... and certainly NOT leave it on the car as a road wheel

Interesting.... as cost co I have always found to be a few thousand percent up the responsibility chart compared to ANY tyre fitter I have used in 35 years - the ONLY ones who refuse to put new wheels on the front where they belong (as in the brave new world of play station generation) understeer must come before safe braking or turning in to a corner... and they fill with nitrogen (without adding money to the bill) which is more temperature stable and has a bigger molecular structure so stay pumped up, rather than leaking out through the rubber like air does.

Interesting viewpoint there.

Is 'air' not composed of N2 -- 78.084%, O2 -- 20.9476%, Ar -- 0.934%, CO2 -- 0.0314% & water vapour making up the other bit. So are Costco putting 100% N2 in?

What about when normal air is added due to the gas permeability of the rubber, not that tyre compounds contain much in the way of rubber, does that dilute the nitrogen eventually bringing it back to normal air. How much of the loss of the inflators gas is due to valve stem, valve components, porosity of the metal of the wheel, dings and dents in the wheel, poor bead etc ?

The only reason nitrogen is more temperature stable than air is due to the water vapour inherent in air. Water vapour is highly temperature sensitive.
If you dry the air before pumping up tyres it's just as temperature stable. The difference in porosity due to molecular size is pretty irrelevant. If the oxygen leaches out faster than nitrogen the gas remaining in the tyre is nitrogen rich. Eventually it will end up pure nitrogen due to all the oxygen having leached out.
Yeah right.
Whilst pure N2 might be of benefit to F1 seeking every single tiny advantage it's pure marketing for road use.

As Botus.
I have dressed out steel wheels with worse damage than that - and I am no expert - so your wheel will repair without problems once the tyre is removed.
Poor service though, in not informing you before they fitted the tyre.

Costco are normally quite good with everything although this time they have made a boo boo. Could be the case of the fitter being sh!te rather than Costco saying it's acceptable. Similar to going to KwikFit, Halfords etc, there are some decent mechanics there and some real cowboys. Take it back, I'm sure they will sort it.

Thanks everyone. I'm still not convinced that fitting the best two tyres to the rear is best though
